Checkr•San Francisco, CA
•$185,000 - $218,000•Hybrid

About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer on Checkr’s MVR team, reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will build and evolve systems that power motor vehicle record screenings. You will lead the design and execution of reliable, scalable services across the MVR lifecycle, from ordering and retrieving records from data sources to processing, normalizing, and delivering them in customer reports. You will partner with Product, Data Supply Chain, Supply Chain Operations, and Business Operations to shape the platform’s long-term architecture and ensure MVR screenings scale with Checkr’s growth. The role involves owning complex MVR features from ideation and technical design through implementation, release, and ongoing operation; defining technical direction and architectural improvements; building high-performance services that meet standards for data accuracy, security, and compliance; and proactively improving reliability through risk identification, incident response, root-cause analysis, and durable fixes. You will also mentor engineers and contribute to code quality, design reviews, and engineering practices. Checkr encourages an AI-first engineering culture, with AI-assisted tools, models, and assistants used to amplify engineering impact. Checkr describes its work environment as collaborative and fast-paced. Employees are expected to work from a Checkr hub office at least three days per week. Hub locations are Denver, San Francisco, Nashville, and Santiago. In-office perks include lunch five times a week, a commuter stipend, and snacks and beverages. A relocation stipend may be available for people willing to relocate to a hub.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building scalable backend systems.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language.
  • Deep understanding of relational databases, ORMs, and RESTful APIs.
  • Experience designing and maintaining reliable distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with microservices, CI/CD, and asynchronous or event-driven architectures.
  • Ability to reason about a platform end to end, assess architectural trade-offs, and design solutions that adapt to changing data sources, volume, and product requirements.
  • Experience integrating with external data providers or third-party APIs and building pipelines that handle inconsistent, delayed, or incomplete data accurately and resiliently.
  • Full-cycle ownership of work and ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to engineering and non-engineering partners.
  • A strong bias for action, resilience through ambiguity, urgency, and ownership in delivering outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development lifecycle for complex MVR features, from ideation and technical design through implementation, release, and ongoing operation.
  • Define and drive the technical direction for MVR systems, identifying architectural improvements that increase reliability, reduce turnaround time, and make the platform easier to extend.
  • Partner with Data Supply Chain, Supply Chain Operations, Product, and Operations to translate data-provider realities and customer needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Design, build, and maintain high-performance services that meet high standards for data accuracy, security, and compliance.
  • Identify systemic risks across MVR data flows, lead incident response and root-cause analysis, and drive durable fixes to prevent recurrence.
  • Mentor engineers and raise the bar on code quality, design reviews, and engineering practices.
  • Use AI-assisted tools, models, and assistants as part of the engineering workflow.

Benefits

  • Learning and development allowance.
  • Competitive cash and equity compensation, with opportunity for advancement.
  • 100% medical, dental, and vision coverage.
