About The Position

Pearson is hiring a senior individual-contributor engineer for its Higher Education core assessment team. The role contributes to the evolution of objective assessment experiences for an AI-enabled world while supporting an established platform that delivers more than 3 billion questions to students annually. Working within an SVPG-inspired Product Operating Model, the engineer partners closely with Product Management, UX, and engineering peers to turn product strategy into reliable, scalable software. The role owns moderately complex capabilities end-to-end, from problem framing and design through implementation, testing, release, and operational follow-through. It works across the stack, preferably with .NET and React, and contributes to architecture, APIs, data models, integrations, and platform decisions. The engineer helps teams make technical constraints, dependencies, risks, and trade-offs visible; supports product discovery and iterative delivery; and contributes through code reviews, mentoring, documentation, and sound engineering practices. The role also uses or learns AI-assisted development tools and modernizes legacy systems pragmatically while maintaining reliability for existing users.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including a track record of delivering production software and owning meaningful technical workstreams end-to-end.
  • Strong full-stack development experience, preferably with .NET/C# and React; comparable modern backend and frontend experience is acceptable.
  • Experience designing and consuming APIs and working with cloud technologies, preferably AWS.
  • Experience building secure, scalable, and maintainable services and user experiences.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in object-oriented design, testing, debugging, code review, source control, CI/CD, performance, accessibility, and secure coding.
  • Experience with or strong interest in AI-assisted coding tools and AI-augmented development workflows; hands-on use is strongly preferred, but willingness to learn is acceptable.
  • Ability to work effectively with Product Management and UX across discovery, feasibility, implementation planning, and iterative delivery.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical concepts, trade-offs, and risks to technical and non-technical partners.
  • Outcome-oriented mindset, strong ownership, sound judgment in ambiguous situations, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in educational technology, assessment platforms, learning tools, or other high-scale B2B2C products.
  • Hands-on experience with .NET, React, cloud platforms, containerization, microservices, observability, or DevOps practices.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate development, improve testing, generate documentation, refactor legacy code, or explore solution options.
  • Experience modernizing legacy software while maintaining reliability for an existing user base.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, enhance, and maintain reliable, scalable, secure, and maintainable full-stack assessment capabilities.
  • Own moderately complex technical workstreams end-to-end, from problem framing and design through implementation, testing, release, and operational follow-through.
  • Contribute to architecture, API design, data-model, integration, and platform trade-off discussions, making recommendations and documenting decisions.
  • Make technical constraints, dependencies, delivery risks, and incremental delivery options visible in roadmap and sequencing discussions.
  • Partner with Product Management and UX during discovery, problem framing, and solution design; contribute engineering perspectives and participate in customer-informed discovery where appropriate.
  • Help translate user needs into technically sound and feasible solutions, and partner with product and design peers to prototype, validate, and iterate before full-scale implementation.
  • Bring an engineering perspective to build/buy/partner discussions, modernization opportunities, and platform investment decisions.
  • Deliver high-quality software iteratively with Product, UX, QA, and platform teams, balancing modernization with near-term product commitments.
  • Raise engineering quality through code reviews, mentoring, technical documentation, and thoughtful engineering practices.
  • Translate product goals and user stories into technical plans, implementation tasks, and acceptance criteria.
  • Manage technical scope and sequencing, surfacing trade-offs and risks early.
  • Use or learn AI-assisted coding tools to improve development speed, code quality, experimentation, testing, documentation, and problem-solving.
  • Modernize legacy systems to improve quality, security, observability, and maintainability without disrupting existing users.
  • Build relationships with Product Management, UX, QA, data, content, platform, and go-to-market partners, and communicate technical strategy, progress, trade-offs, blockers, and risks clearly.
  • Explain the problem being solved, the rationale for the technical approach, its trade-offs, and what success looks like in production.

Benefits

  • Eligible to participate in an annual incentive program.
  • Benefits information is available at the Pearson benefits website.
