Senior Software Engineer, Platform CAM

Atomic Machines•Santa Clara, CA
•$185,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Atomic Machines is building the Matter Compiler™, an AI-native, all-digital manufacturing system that builds working machines directly from code. The Senior Software Engineer, Platform CAM role will build software infrastructure connecting geometric intent with physical processes. The work involves creating reusable representations, algorithms, and interfaces that let process experts describe where an operation acts, what effect it should produce, and which constraints it must satisfy. These capabilities should support a range of material-shaping, treating, and assembly processes while preserving each process’s distinct assumptions and behavior. The engineer will work with process experts who provide physics and process knowledge, translating that knowledge into software models and testable behavior. The role calls for strong software engineering, interest in geometric reasoning, care with physical measurements and approximations, and the ability to work directly with fab equipment. AI tools and agents are expected throughout development, with the engineer accountable for reviewing and verifying the work they accept. The position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area; Atomic Machines has offices in Emeryville and Santa Clara. Compensation includes equity and benefits, with a salary range of $185,000–$220,000 USD.

Requirements

  • Production software ownership, typically 8+ years for the senior target; level is based on demonstrated scope and ability.
  • Productive Python skills and strong experience in Go or C++, with readiness to work in Go.
  • Experience in, or demonstrated deep interest in, geometric reasoning, including representing shapes and spatial relationships, choosing useful abstractions, and reasoning about their limits.
  • Evidence of designing reusable software infrastructure, simplifying complexity, and testing and safely evolving systems with clear interfaces.
  • Strong AI fluency: provide context, challenge proposals, inspect code, and meaningfully test accepted work.
  • Ability to work with domain experts, make assumptions explicit, and turn their knowledge into testable software behavior.
  • Care with units, coordinate frames, tolerances, and approximation; willingness to learn unfamiliar physical processes and work directly with fab equipment.
  • BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve Go and Python software infrastructure for representing geometric intent and generating physical-process operations.
  • Develop reusable geometric representations and algorithms for shapes, regions, coordinate frames, spatial relationships, and process planning.
  • Work with process experts to translate their knowledge into explicit models, constraints, interfaces, and acceptance criteria, including effects that vary over space or time.
  • Extend shared capabilities to new processes while keeping process-specific behavior explicit and integrating with machine software and fab coordination.
  • Test geometric and software correctness, make generated results reproducible, and validate assumptions with experts and physical measurements.
  • Use AI throughout investigation, design, implementation, testing, and documentation; inspect changes and verify results.
