Senior Software Engineer
About The Position
SquareTrade is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its engineering group and develop and operate mission-critical applications. The role works in a fast-paced Agile XP environment that uses pair programming and Test-Driven Development, collaborating with engineering leads, product managers, designers, and platform teams to take solutions from design through production. The engineer will build production-grade Python and Java/Spring Boot applications, APIs, microservices, and distributed backend systems; develop cloud-native services for containerized environments; and create Generative AI and agentic AI applications that integrate LLMs, tools, enterprise services, and business workflows. The role also involves deploying and operating services on cloud and container platforms, integrating AI services with enterprise systems, and ensuring scalability, resiliency, observability, security, and high availability. This is a hybrid role associated with SquareTrade’s Denver office. The estimated base compensation is $145,000–$155,000. Candidates offered the position must submit to a background investigation.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience building production applications.
- Strong hands-on experience with Python application development.
- Strong experience designing and building cloud-native applications and microservices.
- Strong understanding of backend engineering concepts, including APIs, distributed systems, concurrency, scalability, resiliency, and application architecture.
- Experience developing backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
- Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka or similar event-driven or messaging technologies.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including relational data modeling and application integration.
- Hands-on experience with AWS or another major cloud platform, along with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, logging, observability, security, and production support.
- Ability to independently own technical problems from design through production and communicate effectively across engineering and product teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related major is required.
- Hands-on experience with Test-Driven Development and writing high-quality, testable code.
- Comfort working in a pair-programming XP environment.

Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate production-grade Python and Spring Boot applications and services, including APIs, microservices, and distributed backend systems.
- Build and evolve cloud-native applications designed to run reliably and scale in containerized environments.
- Develop agentic AI and Generative AI applications integrating LLMs, tools, enterprise services, and business workflows.
- Deploy and operate services using technologies such as AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD platforms.
- Integrate AI services with existing enterprise APIs and microservices while maintaining clear service boundaries.
- Design services for scalability, resiliency, observability, security, and high availability.
- Monitor and improve production systems and troubleshoot complex issues.
- Participate in architecture and design discussions, code reviews, automated testing, production troubleshooting, and operational support.
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and platform teams to take solutions from design through production.
