Senior Software Engineer

Recycleye•Stratford, CT

About The Position

Recycleye is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a small software group within a larger product team. The team builds software control systems for waste separation systems deployed in Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). The technology stack includes low-latency Go services, GStreamer video pipelines, real-time Python data processing, Azure infrastructure, Linux systems, and Python web applications. The role suits a developer skilled in Python or Go who is comfortable working across the stack and learning new technologies. The engineer will own problems end to end, from performance tuning to client web dashboards and industrial operator interfaces. Priorities can change and deadlines may be tight, but the work is varied. The role includes occasional hands-on work with conveyors, robotic pickers, air-jet ejection hardware, and industrial touchscreen HMIs. It also involves occasional UK site visits to MRFs and participation in a support rota that is not 24/7 and is never client-facing.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of commercial software engineering experience, including shipping and supporting production systems.
  • Recent experience taking personal work from design through to production, with the ability to deliver with minimal oversight.
  • Willingness to learn what is needed to tackle varied technical problems beyond traditional software role boundaries.
  • Strong Linux fundamentals or a desire to learn, and comfort using the command line.
  • Experience with at least two or three of the following: Go, GStreamer, Azure or another cloud platform such as AWS or GCP, Python, and real-time or latency-sensitive systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a very small team, self-direct, make pragmatic trade-offs, and deliver under deadline pressure.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to operational industrial sites and work hands-on with physical equipment.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industrial or embedded systems, PLCs, fieldbus protocols, or machine vision.
  • Understanding of electronics, microcontrollers, or PCBs.
  • Experience deploying computer vision or ML inference at the edge.
  • Experience with relational and columnar databases; the team uses PostgreSQL and ClickHouse.
  • Ability to problem-solve under pressure while providing second-line support.
  • Opinions and ideas about team processes, planning, and tools.

Responsibilities

  • Build low-latency Go services for real-time data and control paths, minimising latency and jitter.
  • Build, debug, and optimise GStreamer video pipelines, including camera integration, encoding and decoding, streaming, and capture.
  • Work on Azure cloud infrastructure, including virtual machines, container apps, deployment, networking, storage, and monitoring.
  • Provision and maintain edge Linux machines, including networking, systemd, containers, performance tuning, remote access, and recovery.
  • Use Ansible and Tailscale in the infrastructure environment.
  • Develop Python internal tools, operator interfaces, APIs, and data pipelines.
  • Work occasionally with conveyors, robotic pickers, and air-jet ejection hardware.
  • Develop graphical interfaces for industrial touchscreen HMIs.
  • Own work from design through production and support.
  • Attend occasional UK site visits to MRFs and participate in the support rota.

Benefits

  • Day 1 health insurance through Vitality.
  • Unlimited holiday.
  • £1,000 annual professional development budget.
  • Direct influence over technical direction.
  • Opportunity to work on a product with a tangible physical output.
