Senior Software Engineer - HW/SW in Fleet Infrastructure

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $261,000

About The Position

The Operating Systems and Server team within Microsoft 365 Core Platform improves the reliability, security, compliance, and operational health of infrastructure powering Microsoft 365 services worldwide. The team builds systems and automation to keep the cloud fleet secure, current, and resilient, focusing on operating system lifecycle management, firmware health, patch freshness, vulnerability remediation, fleet compliance, and safe deployment of platform updates. The Senior Software Engineer designs, builds, and operates large-scale distributed systems that analyze fleet telemetry, identify security and freshness risks, and automate remediation across Microsoft 365 infrastructure. The role spans cloud engineering, operating systems, firmware, security, data platforms, and AI-assisted operations, and involves working with security, hardware and firmware engineering, Azure infrastructure, fleet management, service owners, and site reliability engineers. The role also encompasses management of a dedicated engineering lab used to validate server platforms, deployment processes, operating system changes, and firmware updates before production release. Lab responsibilities include server inventory and capacity planning, hardware installation and retirement, configuration consistency, test readiness, documentation, and practical networking configuration and troubleshooting. The environment should remain representative, reliable, secure, and available for engineering validation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 4 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 3 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python; or bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 5 years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of operating system internals, strong expertise in Windows, and practical experience with Linux, including debugging and troubleshooting kernels, drivers, system services, networking stacks, crash dumps, and performance issues.
  • Experience collecting, correlating, and analyzing diagnostic data at scale, including event logs, traces, performance counters, networking telemetry, driver diagnostics, and other system-level signals to identify root cause and drive remediation.
  • Ability to build or leverage pipelines that aggregate and analyze diagnostic data, such as Kusto/Azure Data Explorer or similar, to identify root cause, detect systemic issues, and drive remediation across the M365 Fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build large-scale distributed services that improve operating system, firmware, security, and patch freshness across Microsoft 365 infrastructure.
  • Develop telemetry, analytics, and reporting platforms to measure fleet compliance, update readiness, vulnerability exposure, firmware health, and remediation progress.
  • Build intelligent services to detect freshness gaps, identify at-risk infrastructure, prioritize remediation, and forecast fleet security or compliance risk.
  • Create safe automation workflows for operating system updates, firmware upgrades, security patch deployment, configuration enforcement, and remediation orchestration.
  • Partner with security, hardware, firmware, operating system, and infrastructure teams to define and execute data-driven strategies for improving fleet health and reducing exposure.
  • Build AI-assisted experiences to accelerate investigation of patching failures, firmware issues, configuration drift, vulnerability exposure, and live-site incidents.
  • Improve operational safety through staged rollout systems, health gates, rollback mechanisms, policy enforcement, and strong observability.
  • Manage lab infrastructure, including servers, top-of-rack switches, load balancers, and inventory.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, design discussions, and live-site operations.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering excellence across the organization.
  • Drive projects from concept and design through production deployment, measurement, and operational ownership.
  • Manage lab server inventory and capacity planning, hardware installation and retirement, configuration consistency, test readiness, and documentation.
  • Configure and troubleshoot lab networking infrastructure, including top-of-rack switches, VLANs, load balancers, virtual IP addresses, routing, addressing, connectivity, and related network dependencies.
  • Diagnose issues across server, firmware, operating system, deployment, and network layers, and drive them through resolution.
