Senior Software Engineer - Design Systems
About The Position
As a Senior Frontend Engineer on Mercury’s Design Systems team, you will build and maintain the components, patterns, and foundations—including tokens, typography, color, and layout—that Mercury’s product is built from. The role focuses on creating reusable, accessible, high-performing, carefully crafted design-system elements that help product teams build better experiences faster. You will help develop a design system that works effectively for people and AI, and improve the design team’s prototyping experience so it can rapidly prototype, iterate on the product, and explore new concepts. You will also mentor colleagues and establish best practices to raise the team’s craft and AI fluency.
Requirements
- At least 7 years of frontend development experience.
- Deep experience with React, TypeScript, and modern web technologies.
- Experience building or maintaining a design system or shared component library.
- Thorough command of modern frontend tooling, including build systems, CI/CD, and testing.
- High agency and comfort creating clarity in ambiguous spaces; takes ownership and acts without waiting for a defined path.
- First-principles systems thinking oriented toward outcomes and clear, results-driven decisions.
- Strong product taste and an instinct for changes that create leverage across multiple teams.
- Hands-on fluency at the intersection of AI and software development, including understanding how emerging AI paradigms are changing software development and applying them practically to the design system and its users.
Responsibilities

- Maintain high standards for accessibility, performance, and pixel-level craft.
- Lead projects that deliver new UI patterns addressing real pain points for product teams.
- Develop the design system to work effectively with AI and apply AI technology to create leverage.
- Improve the design system’s prototyping experience to help the design function prototype, iterate, and explore concepts rapidly.
- Mentor colleagues and share clear best practices to raise craft and AI fluency.
