Senior Software Engineer
About The Position
Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build technology that supports better health outcomes. The role can be performed by telecommuting from anywhere within the United States, subject to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy. The engineer will contribute throughout the software development lifecycle, collaborate with business, IT, architecture, and cross-functional teams, and deliver software through Agile/Scrum sprints. The position includes designing and developing APIs and microservices in C#/.NET Core and user interfaces in Angular or React, improving development processes, and supporting deployed production systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Operations Research, Finance, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
- At least 5 years of professional C# and .NET development experience.
- At least 5 years of experience with unit and integration testing.
- At least 3 years of professional experience building services or full-stack applications using technologies such as FastAPI, Flask, Node.js, React, Angular, TypeScript, and HTML/CSS.
- At least 3 years of professional experience with CI/CD deployment pipelines and Git-based source control workflows in a production software development environment.
- At least 3 years of experience developing solutions hosted with public cloud providers such as Azure or AWS.
- At least 1 year of experience using AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Codex, or Claude Code.
- Adherence to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy for telecommuters.
- Pass a drug test before beginning employment.

- Experience with Kubernetes and Azure application hosting.
- Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities.
- Ability to lead peers and teams outside direct management, with strong articulation and stakeholder management skills.
Responsibilities
- Perform software engineering work across requirements analysis, application design, code development, and testing.
- Help teams improve the efficiency, quality, and speed of development processes.
- Rally cross-functional teams around major goals and initiatives.
- Design and implement product features in collaboration with business and IT stakeholders.
- Design reusable components, frameworks, and libraries.
- Work closely with architecture groups and drive solutions.
- Participate in Agile/Scrum to deliver high-quality software releases every two weeks through sprints.
- Review code and provide feedback on best practices and performance improvements.
- Troubleshoot post-deployment production support issues and develop solutions.
- Design and develop APIs and microservices in C#/.NET Core and user interfaces in Angular or React.
