Senior Software Engineer , Tech Lead
About The Position
Guidewire’s Product Development & Operations organization is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build secure, scalable platform capabilities for property and casualty insurers. The role provides technical leadership in designing and delivering core application-platform services, working across backend services, infrastructure, and developer experience. The engineer will use cloud, data, and AI technologies to improve reliability, customer value, operational excellence, and efficiency. The position involves designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining backend services, APIs, microservices, and distributed systems. The engineer will apply coding agents, automation, and data-driven insights to accelerate development while maintaining quality and responsible AI practices. They will collaborate with product, infrastructure, security, and other cross-functional teams, contribute to cloud and data platform adoption and reliability improvements, resolve complex technical issues, improve engineering practices, and mentor junior engineers. During the first six months, the engineer will learn the application platform, deliver secure and scalable backend services, identify opportunities to improve developer productivity and operational reliability, apply AI-enabled development practices, and contribute to cloud and data platform adoption. Over time, the role’s technical leadership will influence platform direction and support new product launches. Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in backend software engineering, including system design and development of platform services.
- Strong proficiency in at least one of Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python, with the ability to work effectively in other languages.
- Experience designing and building APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
- Experience with Kubernetes and infrastructure as code.
- Experience using coding agents, automation tools, or similar technologies to improve engineering productivity.
- Understanding of software quality, scalability, availability, observability, and application security practices.
- Strong collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.
- Ability to embrace AI in the current role and use data-driven insights to drive innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement.
Nice To Haves
- Degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience operating production services in a public-cloud environment.
- Experience with platform engineering, developer tooling, continuous integration and delivery, service reliability, or cloud-native application development.
- Experience mentoring engineers or serving as a technical lead on cross-functional initiatives.
- Familiarity with insurance technology, enterprise software as a service, data platforms, or responsible AI practices.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of backend services for Guidewire’s application platform.
- Build APIs, microservices, and distributed systems that improve developer experience and support reliable product delivery.
- Use agentic coding tools, automation, and data-driven insights to accelerate development while maintaining engineering quality and responsible AI practices.
- Engineer for scalability, availability, observability, performance, and security across the platform.
- Collaborate with product managers, infrastructure engineers, security partners, and other cross-functional teams to deliver secure and efficient platform operations.
- Contribute to cloud and data platform adoption, service reliability, security improvements, and new product initiatives aligned with PDO priorities.
- Identify and resolve complex technical issues, improve engineering practices, and deliver measurable improvements in platform efficiency and customer value.
- Support and mentor junior engineers through feedback, knowledge sharing, and hands-on technical guidance.
- Help advance reliable platform operations, stronger security, faster incident resolution, and measurable customer value.
