About The Position

The Office of Innovation & Technology (OIT) is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their internal development shop and work on critical business and resident-facing applications for phila.gov. This role is part of OIT’s reimagined Software Engineering group, which focuses on developing, procuring, and maintaining custom software. The Senior Software Engineer will work alongside UX professionals, content strategists, and other members of the Digital Services team, guiding the implementation of City standards for phila.gov. The primary responsibilities include building new features on the Directus headless CMS and the PhilaUI Vue.js application, migrating from the current WordPress implementation, and collaborating with stakeholders across departments to design technical and process solutions. The role also involves mentoring other engineers, conducting code reviews, and fostering a collaborative environment within a team that utilizes open-source tools and cloud infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited college or university with major coursework in Computer Science, a related engineering field, or equivalent experience.
  • Boot camps or alternative pathways are accepted.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing modern web applications in a production environment.
  • Experience writing and establishing software patterns for an enterprise CMS.
  • Experience with SQL or Postgres databases.
  • Deep experience working alongside other developers.
  • Strong full stack development skills.
  • Strong background working with AWS and cloud infrastructure.
  • Ability to learn and troubleshoot obscure error messages.
  • Ability to see projects holistically and identify and break through roadblocks.
  • Ability to take unclear/incomplete requirements and ask the right questions to develop solutions.
  • Belief that code must be tested.
  • Care for and support other engineers on the team.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong experience with Vuejs is preferable, but not required so long as competency with another component-based web framework can be demonstrated.
  • Experience deploying and supporting applications on AWS.
  • Ability to demonstrate background writing clear technical documentation for other engineers.
  • Strong opinions on the right way to do things, with an openness to change mind and share in code reviews.
  • Experience building, maintaining, or supporting a CMS for a large organization.
  • Knowledge of how to debug complex problems using logic and following a clear pattern.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new features and APIs for phila.gov.
  • Perform UI development.
  • Review code of other team members within the Git flow process.
  • Write unit tests.
  • Monitor features that have been launched.
  • Support the WordPress platform.
  • Work with stakeholders at OIT and other departments as part of the agile software development process.
