About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for architecting and delivering Java-based services at the core of Ambry's platform modernization. The role aligns technology execution with strategic business goals and owns the design and development of Spring Boot microservices that replace legacy monolith functionality. It drives legacy-system refactoring, cloud migration, microservices adoption, and CI/CD maturity while safeguarding architectural coherence, mitigating technical debt, and keeping major initiatives on schedule and operationally sound. The position leads platform architecture and implementation, including decomposing legacy PHP/Symfony functionality into resilient Java services; building AWS-native solutions and secure REST APIs; modernizing identity systems; optimizing data access; and establishing engineering standards for testing, delivery, and observability. It partners with QA, DevOps, Product, Architecture, and Regulatory teams, mentors engineers, leads complex technical initiatives, resolves production issues, and maintains awareness of SOX and HIPAA requirements in a regulated healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, with deep experience in distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated experience decomposing monolithic applications into microservices.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services including ECS/Fargate, SQS, SNS, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, and IAM.
  • Strong command of REST API design, authentication and authorization patterns, and enterprise integration.
  • Strong experience with relational databases such as MySQL/Aurora and ORM frameworks such as Hibernate/JPA, including query tuning.
  • Proficiency with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native delivery practices.
  • Proven ability to lead technical direction and mentor engineers across levels.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and architectural decision-making skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Experience in healthcare, genomics, diagnostics, or other regulated environments.
  • Experience with Okta or comparable identity providers.
  • Working knowledge of PHP/Symfony sufficient to refactor legacy functionality.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, or comparable infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Familiarity with Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) practices.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end architecture, design, and implementation of Java and Spring Boot microservices across the platform.
  • Define and promote target-state architecture, service boundaries, and upgrade paths, and document them for engineering and stakeholder audiences.
  • Lead decomposition of legacy PHP/Symfony monolith functionality into resilient, independently deployable Java services.
  • Design and build AWS-native solutions using ECS/Fargate, SQS, SNS, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, and Parameter Store.
  • Build and maintain secure REST APIs with robust validation, error handling, authentication, and authorization.
  • Drive identity modernization, including OAuth2/OIDC and migration from LDAP to Okta.
  • Design and optimize data access layers using JPA/Hibernate, including ORM mappings, schema evolution, index strategy, and query tuning.
  • Establish engineering standards for unit and integration testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, logging, and alerting.
  • Partner with QA, DevOps, Product, Architecture, and Regulatory teams to deliver compliant, production-ready software.
  • Mentor engineers across levels through code reviews, design reviews, and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead technical planning and execution of complex, multi-sprint initiatives and surface delivery risks early.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues affecting service performance, stability, and reliability.
  • Maintain awareness of and compliance with SOX and HIPAA requirements in a regulated healthcare environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits depending on the position.
