About The Position

Workato is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build the distributed backend for its AI agent platform and developer-facing products. The role focuses on event-driven services, real-time integrations, and APIs that enable agents to perform work reliably. The systems must remain correct and available as the platform scales toward 1 million users over the next year.

The engineer will build horizontally scalable backend services and real-time surfaces, integrate LLMs and agentic harnesses into production, and drive features from ideation and architecture through deployment, observability, and iteration. The role also contributes to engineering quality through clean, tested code, thoughtful reviews, and mentorship.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience shipping and operating production backend systems at scale.
• Strong proficiency in Python and the ability to write clean, well-tested, maintainable code.
• Deep distributed-systems fundamentals, including designing for correctness and availability under partial failure, backpressure, and load.
• Hands-on experience with event-driven, streaming, or real-time systems, such as queues, pub/sub, or long-lived connections.
• Comfort operating production services on Kubernetes in the cloud and instrumenting them with metrics, tracing, and dashboards.
• Solid API and software-architecture instincts, including the ability to make and defend sensible trade-offs amid ambiguity.
• High agency and ownership, with the ability to drive work from ambiguity through delivery and iteration.
• A reliability mindset and ability to design for failure.
• A product-minded approach and concern for the users of the systems being built.
• Use of modern AI tooling in daily work and staying current with its capabilities.
• Excellent written communication; the team works asynchronously and documents its work.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with LLM/agentic products or developer-facing products, including MCP, RAG, APIs, SDKs, or CLIs.
• Familiarity with Workato's stack: Python, FastAPI, Postgres, Kubernetes, and AWS; prior experience with every technology is not required.

Responsibilities

• Build event-driven, horizontally scalable backend services that process work reliably and correctly, including during partial system failures.
• Build real-time surfaces and integrations, including streaming connections, gateways, and CLIs, that can withstand load.
• Integrate LLMs and agentic harnesses into production systems.
• Drive features end-to-end, from ideation and architecture through deployment, observability, and iteration.
• Raise the engineering bar through clean, well-tested code, thoughtful reviews, and mentorship.
