About The Position

Apple’s Strategic Data Solutions (SDS) team builds systems that optimize high-impact business processes and mitigate fraud, waste, and abuse. The SDS Fulfillment team develops systems that automate and optimize Apple’s order fulfillment and supply chain operations, improving the customer experience while delivering cost, labor, and carbon savings. The software engineering team works closely with machine learning engineers and business teams to create scalable, easy-to-use systems and tools.

As a Software Engineer on the SDS team, you will lead the design and implementation of systems and tools that affect customers and company revenue. The role includes developing production software to optimize and automate business processes, designing reliable and durable system architecture that handles concurrency and peak loads, coordinating infrastructure needs with external teams, and improving fulfillment and supply chain processes. You will also help raise the team’s analytical software development maturity and skills, and own release engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, feature-flagged rollouts, database migrations, and observability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Mastery of Python, Java, Scala, C++, or an equivalent language.
• At least 4 years of experience in software engineering or data science.
• Experience building data science or data analysis tools on Hadoop or cloud-based systems.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or cloud platform deployment.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and durable workflow orchestration frameworks such as Temporal.
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query performance, and migrations.
• Demonstrated understanding of the full software development lifecycle, including design, testing, CI/CD, release, monitoring, and production support.
• Experience designing, building, and scaling high-throughput distributed systems in production.
• Excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking, and communication skills.
• Solid grasp of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.
• Ability to evaluate and apply new technologies quickly.
• Self-motivated, proactive, and solution-oriented.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement production software to optimize and automate business processes.
• Design system architecture focused on durability, reliability, concurrency, and performance under peak loads, including product launches.
• Work with external infrastructure teams to drive development of infrastructure needs.
• Identify opportunities to improve automation and tools.
• Develop and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and stability in fulfillment and supply chain processes.
• Lead efforts to increase the team’s maturity and skill in analytical software development.
• Manage release engineering, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, safe rollouts with feature flags, database schema migrations, and observability tooling.
• Work closely with machine learning engineers and software engineers to design and implement systems and tools.
