Responsibilities

  • Understand User Requirements: Collaborate with stakeholders to determine user requirements, incorporate feedback into future designs, and ensure continuous feedback loops measuring customer value.
  • Design: Lead discussions for product/solution architecture, create proposals, test design hypotheses, and refine code plans. Partially own solutions with minimal technical oversight. Develop design documents, determine technology leverage, and ensure system architecture meets security and compliance requirements.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Independently create plans for testing and assuring quality, define success outcomes, and identify needs for broad versus selected testing approaches. Drive efforts to add new tests, remove antiquated tests, aggregate tests, and integrate automation features.
  • Dependency Identification and Design Documentation: Drive identification of dependencies and development of design documents for products, applications, services, or platforms. Identify and coordinate with other teams and technologies, understand up and downstream effects, drive reliability, optimize dependency chains, and resolve conflicts between teams.
  • Coding: Produce extensible and maintainable code, optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code. Apply metrics to drive code quality and stability, and adhere to coding patterns and best practices. Use debugging tools and examine logs, telemetry, and other methods to verify assumptions. Conduct retrospective debugging to identify root causes.
  • Code Reviews: Review product code to ensure quality standards, reliability, accuracy, and scalability. Apply feedback to current and future iterations. Participate in code reviews to ensure coding standards are followed, considering diagnosability, reliability, and maintainability. Apply and screen for coding patterns and best practices.
  • Implementation: Leverage subject-matter expertise to drive project plans, release plans, and work items. Organize work into smaller task sets. Guide team members for project estimation and escalate issues. Drive creation and conducting of experimentation, monitor developments for prototyping and testing, and interpret results. Create and update implementation frameworks, drive implementation and deployment, and ensure safe deployments.
  • Reliability and Supportability: Maintain operations of live services, implement solutions for complex issues impacting performance or functionality, and escalate as necessary. Write postmortems and share insights. Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), guide other engineers, develop and follow playbooks, and monitor systems for degradation. Respond within Service Level Agreement (SLA) timeframes. Drive efforts to reduce incident volume and provide broad resolutions. Integrate instrumentation for gathering telemetry data and create outputs like notifications or dashboards. Collect, classify, and analyze data on system metrics, refine products through data analytics, and make informed engineering decisions.
  • Engineering Excellence: Build, enhance, reuse, and contribute to software developer tools. Use open source when possible. Develop skills in tools outside areas of expertise. Identify internal tools and create useful tools for product creation. Share best practices and teach others about new tools and strategies. Drive comprehensive application of automation in production and deployment. Run code in simulated environments to confirm functionality. Define and develop standardized, repeatable, scalable solutions. Ensure correct processes are followed for security, privacy, safety, and accessibility. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of compliance implications. Stay current with skills, proactively seek new knowledge, and adapt to new trends. Apply and extrapolate best practices for reliable code development. Demonstrate and maintain an up-to-date understanding of global and local regulations. Drive product development and scaling to customer requirements. Maintain communication with key partners across the Microsoft ecosystem and act as a key contact for leadership.
