About The Position

Roblox is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Real-time Analytics Platform team. The team’s data infrastructure processes petabytes of data daily and powers analytics, machine learning, and product decisions for a platform serving more than 200 million daily active users. The engineer will design, build, and scale core OLAP infrastructure for sub-second analytical queries across Roblox. The team owns and operates StarRocks and Apache Druid, and works on high-throughput streaming ingestion and low-latency MPP query processing. The role includes leading the next-generation architecture of the real-time analytics platform, with ownership of complex technical initiatives spanning MPP engine performance, streaming ingestion, and cluster scalability. The position is based in an office in San Mateo, California, onsite Tuesday through Thursday, with optional office presence Monday and Friday. For this location, the stated annual base salary range is $243,290–$295,250. Full-time employees are eligible for equity compensation and benefits as described on the company’s benefits page.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience building, designing, testing, and maintaining production-grade, large-scale distributed systems.
  • Strong hands-on engineering or operational experience with StarRocks or adjacent OLAP engines such as Apache Druid, ClickHouse, Apache Doris, Apache Pinot, or Trino/Presto.
  • Experience implementing high-volume streaming ingestion using Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Routine Load / Broker Load, or Debezium/CDC pipelines.
  • Expertise in OLAP schema design, including partitioning, bucketing, sort keys, and indexing, and in tuning cost-based SQL query engines at massive scale.
  • Strong proficiency in Java, Go, C++, or Scala, with experience writing clean, highly performant distributed backend code.
  • Experience operating, troubleshooting, and provisioning data infrastructure at scale using Kubernetes and Terraform on AWS or GCP.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across teams, mentor engineers, and drive alignment on complex cross-cutting initiatives.
  • B.S. equivalent in computer science or sufficient experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Core contributions to open-source OLAP databases such as StarRocks, Apache Druid, ClickHouse, or Apache Doris.
  • Experience operating real-time analytical platforms at consumer-internet scale, serving more than 100 million active users.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture, operational health, and scalability of high-throughput OLAP engines, specifically StarRocks and Apache Druid.
  • Optimize engine performance, including cost-based optimization, query planning, vectorized execution, memory optimization, and serialization efficiency, to maximize throughput and maintain sub-second latency under heavy concurrent load.
  • Design, build, and optimize real-time data ingestion pipelines using Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, and native engine load mechanisms.
  • Partner with infrastructure, data science, and product engineering teams on MPP database data modeling, including partitioning, bucketing, sort keys, and materialized views.
  • Lead cluster provisioning, lifecycle management, operations, and capacity planning using Kubernetes and Terraform across cloud environments.
  • Integrate AI/ML and LLM-driven capabilities into query platforms to enable automated self-service mechanisms and intelligent data discovery for engineers.
  • Influence technical direction across teams, mentor engineers, and drive alignment on complex cross-cutting initiatives.

Benefits

  • Equity compensation for full-time employees.
  • Benefits as described on the company’s benefits page.
