About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on builder on the product-led Software Engineering team in Abbott’s Cancer Diagnostics division, focused on Digital Engineering and Integrations. The team owns customer-facing portals for patients, providers, and payers, as well as the integrations that support them. The engineer designs, builds, and operates secure, reliable, full-stack services on AWS in a squad responsible for its product end to end. The role emphasizes high-quality code, thoughtful design, testing, and accountability for services in production, while helping improve engineering practices and supporting the growth of other engineers.

The engineer works with product, UX, QE, and engineering partners in an Agile environment to deliver portal features and support international growth across a distributed architecture. The role is based in Madison, Wisconsin, and the posting specifies a standard work shift with no travel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• At least 8 years of related software engineering experience.
• Demonstrated experience designing, building, and supporting production distributed microservices using Java or a comparable object-oriented language, a framework such as Spring Boot, and RESTful or GraphQL APIs, including event-driven integrations with messaging platforms such as Kafka.
• Experience building and operating services on a major cloud platform such as AWS or Azure.
• Strong SQL and relational database skills, including data modeling, query optimization, and performance tuning.
• Experience writing automated unit and integration tests and working with Git, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills, including investigating complex issues across application services, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure.
• Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and independently own technical deliverables from design through production deployment.

Nice To Haves

• Experience building user interfaces with Angular, TypeScript, and RxJS, with a grounding in HTML, CSS, and accessibility basics; experience with state management (NgRx) or micro-frontend approaches.
• Experience with AI-assisted software engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or equivalent solutions.
• Experience with AWS services such as EKS/ECS, S3, RDS, Lambda, and IAM.
• Experience with Terraform or Kubernetes.
• Experience with NoSQL databases.
• Experience securing APIs using Spring Security and OAuth 2/OIDC.
• Experience working in a regulated industry such as healthcare or life sciences.

Responsibilities

• Design and build RESTful and GraphQL APIs, services, and event-driven integrations using Java, Spring Boot, and messaging platforms such as Kafka, with attention to versioning, error handling, and idempotency.
• Contribute to front-end development by building responsive, accessible user interfaces using Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, HTML, and CSS.
• Address performance, availability, observability, security, and compliance requirements as part of service design.
• Write and automate unit and integration tests to support frequent, confident releases.
• Deploy and operate services on AWS using containers and infrastructure as code, supported by GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
• Apply architectural patterns such as hexagonal and layered architecture to keep services clear, testable, and maintainable.
• Participate in design discussions and code reviews, mentor less-experienced engineers, and help raise engineering quality across the squad.
• Partner with product, UX, QE, and other engineering teams in an Agile environment to deliver features for portal users.
• Help scale portals for international growth in a distributed architecture spanning multiple geographic locations.
• Own technical deliverables and support services from design through production deployment.
