Senior Software Engineer, Fullstack

Valinor Enterprises, Inc.
•Onsite

About The Position

Valinor Terra is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to take technical ownership of Terra’s software platform, which connects environmental sensors in military barracks with facilities teams responsible for keeping those spaces safe and livable. The platform turns sensor readings into alerts and work orders so issues can be addressed before they become emergencies. This role is onsite in Austin. The engineer will build and maintain production software across Valinor’s TypeScript stack, make architecture decisions, and guide Terra’s product from concept through delivery. The work spans software and hardware, including defining how sensors connect, register, and are installed, and developing capabilities such as building-system protocol support, alerting, reporting, and eventually building-system actuation. The role also owns production readiness for Department of Defense and other government users, including reliability, monitoring, security, and technical work related to government authorization on AWS GovCloud. The engineer will establish engineering practices for testing, code review, releases, and AI tools, and help shape hiring and lead future engineers. Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance; an active clearance is preferred but not required.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience.
  • Experience on a small team that took a product from zero to one, including designing its architecture from the ground up.
  • Experience designing multi-tenant systems and understanding the tradeoffs involved; this should not be the first multi-tenant architecture the candidate has built.
  • Full-stack experience, including frontend work and stronger backend skills in services, data, and architecture.
  • Experience owning deployment without a dedicated DevOps team, including containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and Terraform.
  • Ability to explain technical tradeoffs in plain language to non-technical leaders, government customers, and hardware engineers.
  • Track record of building for real users and making engineering tradeoffs in favor of the people using the product.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development, using AI to work faster while understanding the code being shipped.
  • Builder’s mentality and comfort with ownership in an early-stage environment.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • TypeScript and Postgres experience.
  • Experience building software for connected hardware, such as consumer devices, smart home products, or IoT.
  • Experience with telemetry or event-driven systems such as MQTT or Kafka.
  • Active U.S. security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Own Terra’s software product technically, writing production code across the TypeScript stack and making platform architecture decisions.
  • Work with hardware and firmware engineers to define how sensors connect, register, and are installed, enabling technicians to install devices without engineering-team involvement.
  • Deliver the product roadmap from idea to release, including building-system protocol support, alerting channels such as email and SMS, reporting, and eventual building-system actuation.
  • Maintain production readiness for DoD and other government users by owning reliability, monitoring, security, and technical work related to government authorization on AWS GovCloud.
  • Establish engineering practices for testing, code review, releases, and effective use of AI tools.
  • Help shape the hiring plan and lead engineers who join the team.
  • Explain technical tradeoffs clearly to non-technical leaders, government customers, and hardware engineers.
  • Make engineering tradeoffs with the product’s real users in mind.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity packages.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance fully covered for employees.
  • 401(k).
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Two-week company holiday at the end of every calendar year.
  • Fertility benefits.
  • A pro-mental-health and pro-family culture that encourages employees to spend time with themselves and their families.
  • Fun work environment with colleagues who value humor and mutual care.
