About The Position

Apple Service Engineering (ASE) builds and provides the systems and infrastructure that power Apple services, including iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Intelligence, and Maps. The ASE Compute team is hiring an experienced SRE software engineer to build and enhance compute infrastructure so it can scale to meet the needs of Apple’s services. The role focuses on core components of Apple’s Cloud Platform, especially VM lifecycle management and bare metal infrastructure, and helps deliver applications to end users at scale.

The position involves solving infrastructure problems through AI-assisted automation, including building and using AI tools to accelerate triage, operational workflows, and infrastructure tooling for SRE and infrastructure operations. The engineer will collaborate with engineering, QA, program management, and other SRE teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, an engineering-related field, or equivalent related experience.
• At least 7 years in an infrastructure-focused Site Reliability Engineering role.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong advocacy for automation and ownership, with a belief in reducing operational load through software.
• Strong experience building and scaling cloud infrastructure and large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience with OpenStack, KVM or other hypervisor technologies, and Kubernetes.
• High proficiency in Go or Python.
• Ability to collaborate and coordinate with multiple distinct engineering teams and mentor others.
• Experience with highly distributed Unix systems.
• Experience managing, scaling, and troubleshooting infrastructure at planet scale.
• Experience operating large-scale, multi-tenant Infrastructure as a Managed Service.
• Expert-level proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Chef, Ansible, or Terraform.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and implement solutions for VM orchestration and bare metal provisioning in a highly distributed environment.
• Operate, monitor, and triage production and non-production compute environments.
• Prepare alert-handling procedures and runbooks, and collaborate with other SRE teams.
• Participate in on-call rotations to troubleshoot and resolve production issues and minimize downtime.
• Automate deployment and orchestration of compute infrastructure and other routine processes.
• Use AI to gain insight across large systems and build tools for production environments.
• Interact with and support partner teams, including engineering, QA, and program management.
