About The Position

Vercel is hiring a Software Engineer for its Persistence team within the Compute division. The team owns storage and state infrastructure within Hive, Vercel’s compute platform, supporting Builds, Sandboxes, and Functions. The role involves developing infrastructure that runs hundreds of instances across regions where customers deploy code, improving low-level primitives, and contributing to platform features such as Fluid Compute, Persistent Sandboxes, and Custom Images. The role is based in London, UK. Employees within commuting distance of the London office have in-office anchor days; employees elsewhere in the UK work fully remotely. The engineer will manage and improve clusters, write Go, provision infrastructure with Terraform, and work with Nomad. They will also contribute to virtual filesystem and Linux-level infrastructure, own platform reliability and performance, participate in on-call coverage, and collaborate across teams on the convergence of Vercel’s compute systems.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience; Golang is strongly preferred.
  • Deep experience with virtual machines, file systems, and Linux; familiarity with tools such as tcpdump, strace, and iptables.
  • Experience building and operating distributed systems at scale, with attention to performance and reliability.
  • Experience with schedulers and orchestrators for containerized and non-containerized workloads, such as Nomad or Kubernetes.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, and enthusiasm for tackling problems without obvious solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with low-level virtualization or sandbox execution environments.
  • Product engineering experience and concern for the developer-facing impact of infrastructure decisions.
  • Experience with on-call operations for large-scale distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and improve clusters consisting of hundreds of instances deployed across regions where customers deploy and run code.
  • Write Go and use Terraform to provision infrastructure, while working with Nomad to schedule workloads.
  • Rethink infrastructure primitives involving virtual filesystems, Linux primitives, and low-level virtualization.
  • Own the reliability and performance of the compute platform, including on-call coverage.
  • Collaborate across teams to drive the convergence of compute at Vercel.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation package, including equity.
  • Inclusive healthcare package.
  • Mentorship and access to events that support professional networks and skills.
  • Flexible Time Off.
  • Equipment needed for the role and a work-from-home budget.
