About The Position

The Ethernet Systems Engineering team develops, validates, and deploys the in-vehicle Ethernet foundation that enables GM’s Software-Defined Vehicle architecture. The team owns end-to-end system engineering for automotive Ethernet networks—including requirements, architecture, network configuration and communication artifacts, higher-layer protocols such as SOME/IP and Service Discovery, test specifications, automation, and network-bench verification—while collaborating closely with electrical architecture, hardware and software teams, semiconductor suppliers, Tier-1 partners, and industry standards organizations. As part of the broader Embedded Platform Infrastructure Systems Engineering organization, the team helps deliver the reliable, secure, scalable infrastructure capabilities—including communications, diagnostics, safety, cybersecurity, power management, programming, and I/O—that allow vehicle feature teams to build and integrate innovative customer experiences. We are looking for a talented and motivated candidate to join our team in our journey of defining and executing the backbone of our company's future—the next generation Vehicle Electrical and Software Architecture. The Mechatronics Infrastructure organization is looking for a Senior Software Engineer who will develop work on network validation, scripts, and automation to continuously improve robustness and confidence in our in-vehicle Ethernet network performance. The role will interface with both physical and virtual network test assets, such as single network-devices-under-test benches, networked multi-controller virtual models, transaction-level network simulation models, and physical end-to-end network verification benches. The role will focus both on functional verification, and its automation, as well as nonfunctional performance metrics such as temporal behavior. The role will cross-collaborate with teams working on embedded software, system specifications, virtual models, test automation infrastructure, and architecture analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant discipline.
  • Three or more years of experience developing software and validating networks using programming languages such as Python, Rust or C++.
  • Knowledge of computer networking protocols, network architecture, and communication standards, including automotive Ethernet technologies and networking stacks like TCP/IP and SOME/IP.
  • Knowledge of and experience with software development lifecycle and testing methodologies, network trouble-shooting. simulation and analysis tools, and programming languages.
  • Evidence of ability to master new technical areas.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to see the big-picture perspective.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to, for a wide variety of audiences, adapt the explanation of complex technical concepts.
  • Strong teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with peers, cross-functional teams, and stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant discipline.
  • Experience with automotive Ethernet switches and networks based on 100/1000BASE-T1 and 10BASE-T1S.
  • Advanced knowledge of the internals of the data-link layer components (for example, switch internals and communication software stack).
  • Demonstrated experience developing tests for and debugging a complete Ethernet software stack (examples include gPTP, data-link layer prioritization, UDP, TCP/IP, SOME/IP, SOME/IP Service Discovery, DDS, and DoIP).
  • Development and use of virtual models for test and validation of embedded software
  • Knowledge and end-to-end awareness of the hardware and software components (PHYs, switches, hardware interfaces, connectors, cables, software stack, protocols) that make up a network in the automotive domain. Advanced knowledge of internals of Ethernet switch behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy test automation across physical and virtual test assets, ranging from single-controller benches to complete network benches and models
  • Develop solutions for assessment of temporal behavior for a network under test, including performance measurements for single-controller benches, transaction-level models of mixed full-duplex and bus-based automotive Ethernet networks, and precise measurement and regression test of latencies on virtual network models and physical network benches
  • Develop test automation for validation of core elements across a full-stack Ethernet solution
  • Integrate released software builds and system design artifacts with various network test infrastructure assets (virtual and physical) to increase fidelity of end-to-end network health assessment and to expand our CI/CD test pipeline for system test and regression.
  • Perform extensive functional and temporal evaluation of key networking protocols and solutions like gPTP, redundant gPTP, traffic shaping, and redundant communication.
  • Evaluate new hardware and software solutions to support technology insertion into next-generation architectures. Examples include, but are not limited to, Differentiated Services in 10BASE-T1S networks, networking IP in MCUs/SoCs, and new RCP (Open Alliance TC18) solutions.
