About The Position

SewerAI is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to develop Pioneer Desktop alongside the Truck team lead. Pioneer Desktop is an Electron application that runs the Pioneer React web app in a desktop shell and connects it to truck hardware. Operators use it to control inspection cameras, record video, read distance and incline from crawler controllers, code defects to NASSCO standards, and sync inspections to the cloud when connectivity is available. The role contributes across the desktop runtime, including hardware integrations, reliable video recording, offline storage, cloud synchronization, crash diagnostics, and a release pipeline for safely updating software on trucks. The engineer will work with Product, Design, and the web team to simplify operator workflows, help resolve customer issues, and visit trucks and hardware vendors to understand how the software is used. This role requires approximately 5–10% travel for truck visits, customer go-lives, and team offsites.

Requirements

At least 5 years of experience building production software, including real-time software on desktop or hardware-connected applications.
Experience shipping a desktop application, such as Electron, Tauri, Qt, WPF, or native Windows, to users who cannot be accessed remotely through SSH.
Familiarity with desktop application auto-updates, code signing, and crash reporting.
Strong TypeScript skills and understanding of the Electron process model, including main, renderer, preload, and utility processes.
Experience with hardware communication, including serial protocols, byte framing, checksums, unreliable USB, and varying drivers.
Ability to debug on Windows, including familiarity with file locks, path and locale quirks, Event Viewer, Process Monitor, and PowerShell.
Ability to design for failures such as full disks, dropped networks, and processes terminated during writes.
Ability to investigate customer logs and determine what happened.
Strong product fundamentals, including understanding user needs, weighing tradeoffs, and focusing on operator problems.
Ability to explain technical problems in plain language to operators and field supervisors and listen to their descriptions of bugs.
Uses AI coding tools every day to optimize workflow.
Technical skills: TypeScript, Node.js, Electron, React, browser media APIs, ffmpeg, serial communication, database fundamentals, Windows internals and PowerShell, desktop app testing (Playwright for Electron and Vitest), AWS, and CI/CD with GitHub Actions.

Crash analysis experience with minidumps, Crashpad or Breakpad, and symbol servers.
Windows installers and fleet management, including WiX/MSI, Squirrel, Intune, or SCCM.

Video capture and encoding experience, including H.264, capture cards, or RTSP.

Responsibilities

Connect Pioneer Desktop to inspection cameras, truck equipment, and sensors.
Make video recording reliable and protect inspection data when internet access is unavailable.
Improve cloud synchronization, application stability, and software updates for trucks in the field.
Work with Product, Design, and the web team to simplify operator workflows.
Help resolve customer issues and visit trucks and hardware vendors to understand software usage.
Investigate field issues with the Truck team lead and teammates, and follow fixes through to completion.
