Senior Software Engineer, Robotics

Oishii•Clay Township, OH
•$140,000 - $160,000

About The Position

Oishii is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Robotics to develop and maintain the software stack powering autonomous robotic strawberry harvesting. The role involves work across perception, motion planning, data analysis tools, robotic controls, and interfaces, with features tested in offline simulation and validated through smoke and field testing before deployment to physical robots. The engineer will take ownership of key codebase areas, troubleshoot issues with Operations, and collaborate across robotics, hardware, controls, and operations teams to improve reliability and deliver scalable automation solutions. The role may be remote or hybrid depending on the candidate’s location. Approximately 25% travel is required, typically monthly or quarterly, to support deployments and collaborate with teams at the Phillipsburg, New Jersey site. Oishii strongly prefers candidates willing to relocate to the region or spend additional time onsite.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of backend software engineering experience in Python, Rust, or C++, including the ability to design and implement scalable solutions to complex technical challenges.
  • Experience translating operational issues, code traces, and system data into effective software improvements.
  • Proficiency with Linux, shell scripting, and modern software development tools, including Git and Jira.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve engineering productivity while maintaining software quality.
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving in fields similar to robotics, especially on challenging problems without a defined correct answer or requiring iterative improvement.
  • Ability to analyze complex systems, instrument them to collect meaningful statistics and metrics, identify improvement areas, and act on initiatives that improve system performance.
  • Ability to shift priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate clearly and effectively at different levels of an organization.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally across locations and support evolving business needs in a startup environment.
  • Ability to lead through others and develop teams with varied experience levels.

  • Track record of handling complex employee relations issues and addressing sensitive information and difficult situations with tact, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25% to support critical deployments and collaborate with teams at the Phillipsburg, NJ site.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hands-on development, maintenance, and enhancement of software for autonomous robotic strawberry harvesting.
  • Build and support software across the robotics stack, including perception, motion planning, data analysis tools, and robotic controls.
  • Use and further develop AI Agentic development processes involving offline simulation, recreation, and visualization so features are tested before deployment to physical robots.
  • Ramp up on the existing codebase and contribute through targeted development projects.
  • Validate features and bug fixes through simulation, smoke testing, and field testing.
  • Own and continuously improve key areas of the codebase, such as perception, motion planning, robotic interfaces, or controls.
  • Partner with Operations to troubleshoot field issues, prioritize software improvements, and improve system reliability.
  • Collaborate with robotics, hardware, controls, and operations teams to deliver scalable automation solutions.
