Senior Software Engineer (API Integrations)

Handtevy-Pediatric Emergency StandardsDavie, FL

About The Position

Handtevy is seeking a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Enterprise API Integrations to lead the design and implementation of their integration ecosystem. This role is crucial for connecting Handtevy's platform with other healthcare operational systems, focusing on ePCR, controlled substance tracking, and blood product tracking platforms. The engineer will be responsible for both integrating Handtevy as a client with partner APIs and exposing Handtevy's APIs for partners to consume. This position involves end-to-end ownership of the integration platform, including contracts, security, reliability, observability, and the partner-facing interface. The role requires close collaboration with the CTO, engineering leads, product teams, and partner engineering counterparts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of backend development experience, with significant focus on integrations, API platforms, or partner-facing systems.
  • Strong production experience with Node.js and NestJS (or a comparable typed, modular backend framework).
  • Strong proficiency in designing and consuming RESTful APIs, including pagination, idempotency, error contracts, and versioning.
  • Deep understanding of authentication and authorization mechanisms: OAuth 2.0, JWT, SSO/SAML, API keys, and mTLS.
  • Hands-on experience designing resilient integration patterns.
  • Experience with webhooks as both producer and consumer.
  • Experience using OpenAPI/Swagger as a contract.
  • Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases (MySQL, MongoDB/DocumentDB).
  • Experience with AWS services relevant to integrations (Aurora, SQS/SNS/EventBridge, Lambda, Secrets Manager, API Gateway, CloudWatch, S3, SES, CloudFront).
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, Git, and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines).
  • Strong grasp of software design patterns, security best practices, and distributed system tradeoffs.
  • Excellent collaboration and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Awareness of HIPAA requirements.
  • Direct integration experience with controlled substance tracking platforms.
  • Direct experience integrating with blood product tracking systems.
  • Integration experience with ePCR platforms or hospital EHRs via HL7, FHIR, or proprietary APIs.
  • Experience standing up a partner/developer portal or public API documentation site.
  • Familiarity with PHP and Laravel.
  • Event-driven architecture experience (Kafka, Kinesis, EventBridge).
  • Experience with observability platforms (Datadog, New Relic).

Responsibilities

  • Architect and build bidirectional integrations between Handtevy and third-party platforms using patterns like REST, webhooks, polling, HL7 v2 (MLLP), and FHIR R4.
  • Build resilient synchronization engines that handle API outages, rate limiting, schema changes, and malformed data.
  • Define and maintain a canonical internal data model for integration adapters.
  • Evolve Handtevy's public-facing API into a robust partner platform.
  • Own API authentication and authorization for partners, including OAuth 2.0, JWT, and API keys.
  • Enhance the developer experience for partners through OpenAPI specifications, client examples, Postman collections, sandbox data, and documentation.
  • Contribute to SOC 2 controls within integration code paths.
  • Build comprehensive observability into integrations, including structured logs, correlation IDs, metrics, and alerting.
  • Champion test coverage, contract tests, and integration-specific chaos testing.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering Leads to scope integrations, define metrics, and prioritize the roadmap.
  • Collaborate with Clinical, Customer Success, and Implementation teams on customer deployments.
  • Lead technical discussions with partner engineering teams.
  • Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, sprint planning, and mentor other engineers.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
