Senior Software Engineer, AI/ML, Home Context and Foundation Models

Google•Mountain View, CA
•$174,000 - $252,000

About The Position

Google is seeking a software engineer for its Home Intelligence team, which develops intelligence for Google Home products such as voice-enabled speakers and displays, cameras, thermostats, and ambient sensors. The team is applying Gemini to create helpful capabilities across the home. This role focuses on Home Context and the Home Foundation Model (HFM), building production-ready, scalable AI/ML capabilities for real-world smart home applications. The engineer will develop multimodal data and serving pipelines, bring Home Context capabilities and foundation models into production, and work with Research, Infrastructure, Product, and engineering teams to define use cases and improve model and system quality. Google software engineers work on projects critical to Google's needs and are expected to bring versatile technical skills, leadership qualities, and enthusiasm for solving new problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
  • 3 years of experience with end-to-end Machine Learning, such as model deployment, model evaluation, data processing, and debugging.
  • 3 years of experience in one or more of the following: speech/audio, reinforcement learning, ML infrastructure, or another ML specialization.
  • Experience designing and operating distributed computing systems for large-scale AI/ML workloads.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience partnering with research teams to transition novel models into scalable, low-latency production services.
  • Experience taking Machine Learning and Generative AI features from prototype to production environments.
  • Experience with Generative AI techniques, including foundation models, multimodal modeling, and vision modeling.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Build scalable offline and online multimodal data and serving pipelines that integrate camera/video intelligence, HomeGraph device state, and telemetry to provide high-value signals to Home Context and HFM.
  • Design, develop, and productionize Home Context capabilities, such as Home Pulse, household routine modeling, and anomaly detection, and integrate them with Google Home features including Visual Home Brief and Camera Captions.
  • Partner with Research and Infrastructure teams to co-develop, evaluate, and productionize the Home Foundation Model (HFM) for real-world Smart Home applications.
  • Integrate contextual understanding with Identity and Presence signals so downstream Home experiences understand the user.
  • Collaborate with Product, Research, and Vertical engineering teams to define target use cases, build evaluation benchmarks, and improve model and system quality from prototype to launch.
