AI / ML Software Engineer

Fairbanks Morse Defense•Beloit, WI
•Onsite

About The Position

Fairbanks Morse Technology, part of Fairbanks Morse Defense, is hiring an AI/ML Software Engineer to develop production-ready technology combining artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering, automation, and Industrial IoT. The role focuses initially on U.S. Navy shipboard equipment and solutions for predictive maintenance, equipment health monitoring, anomaly detection, and root-cause analysis, with an emphasis on designs that can scale across equipment platforms, customers, and applications. The engineer will own work across the product development lifecycle, from understanding customer challenges and defining requirements through application design, software and machine learning development, deployment, and delivery of actionable outcomes. The work spans backend services, APIs, data pipelines, databases, user interfaces, industrial integrations, cybersecurity, testing, documentation, and CI/CD. Solutions may need to operate in environments without continuous network connectivity. This is a full-time, on-site position in Beloit, Wisconsin. The role requires access or potential access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NOFORN). Candidates must provide acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship and attest that they do not hold dual citizenship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Five or more years of professional software development experience, including delivery of complete applications from requirements through deployment.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous customer needs into clearly defined requirements and tested, working software.
  • Strong Python development skills and proficiency in at least one additional language, such as C#, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, or C++.
  • Experience building REST APIs, data pipelines, databases, and web-based user interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience applying machine learning in production, such as anomaly detection, classification, or time-series analysis, using frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants effectively, with sound judgment around testing, code review, and protection of sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with Git, CI/CD, Docker, and a major cloud platform.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions to customers, engineers, and business leaders.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must provide acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship and attest to not holding dual citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Azure experience.
  • Predictive maintenance, condition-based maintenance (CBM+), prognostics, or equipment health monitoring.
  • Large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or agentic AI workflows.
  • Industrial automation, sensor data, PLCs, OPC UA, Modbus, MQTT, or other industrial communication protocols.
  • U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, or other defense-related technology programs.
  • Secure cloud development, Azure Government Cloud, cybersecurity compliance, NIST, STIG, or RMF.
  • Edge computing, embedded systems, or deploying software in disconnected environments.
  • Cross-platform mobile development, including .NET MAUI.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with customers, engineers, and stakeholders to understand needs, define requirements, and translate them into practical technical solutions.
  • Own the full software development lifecycle, designing and building applications with backend services, APIs, data pipelines, databases, and user interfaces.
  • Develop and deploy machine learning solutions for predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, time-series analysis, and root-cause identification.
  • Build workflows that turn insights into recommended maintenance, work orders, guided troubleshooting, or automated responses.
  • Create modular, maintainable software architectures that can expand to new equipment, customers, and applications.
  • Integrate software with sensors, controllers, industrial data systems, and third-party platforms, including environments without continuous network connectivity.
  • Use AI-powered coding assistants while maintaining standards for code quality, testing, security, and data protection.
  • Incorporate cybersecurity, automated testing, documentation, and CI/CD practices, including applicable NIST, STIG, and Risk Management Framework requirements.
  • Demonstrate working solutions, communicate technical trade-offs, and keep customers and leadership informed as products evolve.
