AI/ML Software Engineer

Fairbanks Morse Defense•Beloit, WI
•Onsite

About The Position

Fairbanks Morse Technology is seeking an AI/ML Software Engineer to design and build complete, reusable software products from customer requirements. The role focuses on applying AI and machine learning to predictive maintenance, root cause analysis, and actions to resolve problems, initially for U.S. Navy shipboard equipment. The engineer will gather and document customer needs, plan and deliver full applications, and architect solutions that can be extended to other equipment, customers, and use cases. The position is full-time and on-site in Beloit, Wisconsin, and reports to the Electrical and Controls Engineering Manager. The engineer will develop AI/ML solutions and connect detection and diagnosis to recommended or automated responses, while integrating with equipment and customer systems, including disconnected edge environments. The role uses AI development tools to accelerate delivery while ensuring generated work is reviewed, tested, and secured. Products must be developed with testing, documentation, CI/CD, security, and compliance requirements in mind. The position requires a relevant technical bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and at least five years of professional software development experience. Because the work may involve Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information classified as NOFORN, candidates must provide proof of U.S. citizenship and attest that they do not have dual citizenship. Acceptable proof includes a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or naturalization certificate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience, including full-stack or full-application delivery from requirements through deployment.
  • Proven ability to clarify an unclear customer need, define requirements, and deliver a working, tested product.
  • Strong Python skills and proficiency in at least one additional language, such as C#, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, or C++.
  • Experience building REST APIs, data pipelines, databases, and web user interfaces.
  • Production experience applying machine learning, such as anomaly detection, classification, or time-series analysis, using tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn.
  • Experience using AI coding tools to accelerate development, with sound judgment regarding testing, code review, and protection of sensitive data.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD, Docker, and a major cloud platform; Azure is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical trade-offs to customers and leadership.
  • Ability to work independently and quickly in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship and attest to having no dual citizenship to meet the NOFORN requirement. Acceptable proof is a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or naturalization certificate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with predictive maintenance, condition-based maintenance (CBM+), or prognostics and health management.
  • Experience with large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, or agentic workflows.
  • Experience with industrial data sources and protocols such as PLCs, OPC UA, Modbus, or MQTT.
  • Experience supporting U.S. Navy or Department of Defense programs, including Azure Government Cloud and RMF, STIG, and NIST requirements.
  • Edge or embedded deployment experience on disconnected hardware.
  • Cross-platform mobile development experience, such as .NET MAUI.

Responsibilities

  • Work with customers and stakeholders to gather requirements, document them clearly, and turn them into a technical plan.
  • Design and build full applications, including backends, APIs, data pipelines, and user interfaces.
  • Architect modular, reusable products that can expand to other assets, customers, and situations without a rewrite.
  • Develop and deploy AI/ML solutions for predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and root cause analysis.
  • Build workflows that connect detection and diagnosis to recommended or triggered fixes, such as guided maintenance, work orders, or automated responses.
  • Use AI coding assistants and tools to build and iterate quickly while reviewing, testing, and securing AI-generated work.
  • Integrate with sensors, controllers, historians, and customer or third-party systems, including in disconnected edge environments.
  • Write tests and documentation, use CI/CD, and build with security and compliance requirements such as STIG, NIST, and RMF from the start.
  • Demonstrate work to customers and stakeholders and keep them informed of progress and risks.
  • Perform other duties as required.
