WorkdayVancouver, BC
CA$140,000 - CA$210,000Hybrid

About The Position

Workday is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer to join their Agent Factory team. This role involves designing and delivering full-stack applications and platform services that power Workday's AI agents. The engineer will work within a cross-functional pod, leading the architecture and implementation of complex features across modern user interfaces, backend microservices, Workday platform domain layers, data models, APIs, asynchronous workflows, and delivery infrastructure. The goal is to transform powerful technology into secure, accessible, and reliable products that streamline HR and Finance workflows. Additionally, the role includes improving system performance, engineering practices, and team delivery, while mentoring engineers and collaborating with Product Management, UX, Machine Learning, and platform teams. This is a production-grade AI role focused on solving real customer challenges at global scale, offering high trust, high expectations, and real impact.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, including significant full-stack development experience.
  • 5+ years of experience with backend web development frameworks; Python frameworks such as Flask, Django, or FastAPI are preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience working with relational databases; PostgreSQL is preferred.
  • Strong experience building modern web applications using React or a comparable frontend framework.
  • Deep knowledge of backend service architecture, microservice patterns, and REST API design.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating SaaS products in cloud environments.
  • Proficiency in one or more backend languages, such as Python, Kotlin, or Java.
  • Experience with TypeScript, frontend state management, component libraries, and modern build tooling.
  • Strong understanding of distributed-system architecture and its reliability, consistency, scalability, and operational trade-offs.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases, including query analysis and indexing optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD pipeline automation.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices, automated testing, production observability, and incident support.
  • Solid understanding of secure coding, threat modeling, and vulnerability management tools such as Snyk or SonarQube.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose and optimize distributed-system performance at scale.
  • Experience leading technical architecture and delivering complex capabilities across multiple application layers.
  • Proven success mentoring engineers and driving engineering excellence across teams.
  • Strong debugging, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous or complex problems into clear, thoughtful solutions.
  • Experience working in fast-paced Agile environments using Scrum practices and Git-based workflows.
  • Commitment to accessibility, inclusion, continuous learning, and team-oriented delivery.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AWS or GCP infrastructure.
  • Experience integrating machine learning services or data pipelines into web applications.
  • Experience with complex content systems, such as rich-text editors or document-parsing tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of WCAG 2.1 or WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards.
  • Familiarity with Elasticsearch.
  • Familiarity with C4 or similar architectural diagramming frameworks.
  • Experience with lifecycle management and cross-environment feature delivery within Workday XO or comparable enterprise platform layers.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate end-to-end features spanning frontend applications, backend microservices, Workday platform domain layers, and CI/CD infrastructure.
  • Build modern, accessible user experiences using frameworks such as React and contribute to component libraries, state management, and build optimization.
  • Develop resilient, scalable RESTful APIs using established authentication and authorization patterns.
  • Design business logic, data models, and APIs that support lifecycle management, cross-environment delivery, and full-stack integration.
  • Lead the architecture and delivery of complex features, asynchronous workflows, and data-processing systems.
  • Integrate AI and machine learning services into customer-facing HR and Finance workflows.
  • Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks across the stack, including database queries, indexing, service interactions, and frontend rendering.
  • Apply secure coding practices, threat modeling, vulnerability management, automated testing, and observability throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Create architectural models, system diagrams, and technical documentation that align cross-team strategy.
  • Own services from development through production—you build it, you run it.
  • Participate in code reviews, Agile ceremonies, operational support, and continuous delivery activities.
  • Partner with Product Managers, UX designers, Machine Learning engineers, and platform teams to deliver cohesive product experiences.
