Senior Software Development Engineer

BLUE ORIGINSeattle, WA
$197,529 - $276,540

About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we’re developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin’s mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies. The Applications team administers Jira, Confluence, and a portfolio of enterprise applications used by everyone at Blue Origin. When the entire company plans work and shares knowledge, it runs on the platforms this team owns. Today, much of the team's operational work arrives as manual tickets - provisioning, configuration changes, access requests, and routine maintenance handled one at a time by engineers. We are hiring a Senior Software Development Engineer to change that. Your charter is to systematically eliminate manual ticket work by building automation and self-service tooling that lets users help themselves. You will design and ship the software that turns a reactive, ticket-driven workflow into a scalable, self-service platform. AI is a core tool in how you work; you will leverage AI-assisted development to accelerate how you build, test, and deliver. This is a high-leverage role: every workflow you automate gives time back to both the team and the hundreds of engineers who currently wait on manual fulfillment. Our tech stack at a glance: Amazon Web Services Atlassian (Jira, Confluence, REST APIs) Docker / Kubernetes Terraform Datadog Linux Python, Go, Groovy AI/LLM tools (Claude, Codex, etc.) What makes our engineering team successful? A relentless bias toward automation; if it can be self-service, it should be Technical breadth and depth with a strong understanding of emerging trends, including AI-assisted development Ownership mentality: you build it, you run it, you improve it A "customer first" mindset, recognizing that your customers are fellow engineers waiting on manual work that should not require a ticket High judgment with technical design decisions and the ability to balance competing priorities The ability to build consensus across teams, champion ideas through to adoption, and lead without authority Comfort operating at the senior level: leading designs, mentoring others, and driving decisions without close oversight

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Go, Groovy, or comparable languages
  • Proven track record of building automation or self-service tooling that measurably reduced manual operational work (not theoretical; demonstrated delivery)
  • Experience designing and building integrations or internal tooling
  • Experience with REST APIs and system-to-system integration patterns
  • Experience building automations and workflows within Jira using ScriptRunner, native automation, or Atlassian REST APIs
  • Solid understanding of AWS or comparable cloud platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical design efforts and mentor other engineers
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work through ambiguous requirements and deliver practical solutions
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

  • Experience building self-service platforms or portals for internal users
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Codex, etc.) in day-to-day workflows

  • Experience with containerized workloads (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Track record of measurably reducing operational toil through automation
  • Experience with authentication and authorization workflows between systems (OIDC, SAML, OAuth)
  • Familiarity with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar)
  • Familiarity with federal compliance frameworks (CMMC, NIST) and building automation that supports compliance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Identify, design, and build automation and self-service tooling that eliminates manual ticket-driven work across the team's application portfolio
  • Own the full lifecycle of the software you build, from design through production operation
  • Actively balance technical debt against feature delivery across multiple systems
  • Design and build integrations between enterprise applications (Jira, Confluence, and adjacent systems)
  • Partner with the team's infrastructure engineers to ensure automation is reliable, secure, and well-architected
  • Lead technical design efforts, mentor teammates, and review the work of others for quality and correctness
  • Collaborate with internal customers to understand pain points, gather requirements, and validate that self-service solutions meet their needs
  • Establish patterns and frameworks that make it easy for the team to build future automation consistently
