About The Position

Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, the Senior Shift Supervisor provides high level operational leadership across a large mining and tailings operation consisting of approximately 800 heavy equipment operators working on haul trucks, dozers, excavators, graders, and support equipment. This role oversees approximately 4 Shift Supervisors and 28 Team Leaders (Field Leaders,) ensuring safe, efficient, and consistent execution of daily production activities. The Senior Shift Supervisor acts as the operational anchor for the shift, driving performance, supporting field leadership, and ensuring alignment with organizational expectations, safety standards, and production plans. This is a safety-sensitive position that requires completion of pre-employment/pre-access testing.

Requirements

  • Completion of a High School Diploma, or a GED equivalent is required.
  • A valid Class 5 License (or equivalent) is required, along with a satisfactory 3-year Drivers Abstract.
  • Proficiency in operating heavy haulers, including but not limited to Caterpillar 797 and Caterpillar 793.
  • CSTS/ OSSA or CSO or BSO is required.
  • AMSA supervisor certificate is required.
  • Knowledge in MS Office, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
  • Profiiency with INX or similar safety/ operational reporting systems.
  • At least 3+ years of verifiable experience in a supervisory or senior role in an industrial / production environment, relating to mining, civil construction and heavy equipment oerations.
  • At least 7+ years in experience in mining, tailings, or heavy industrial operations.
  • Strong communication, decision-making and cconflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to Shift Supervisors and Team Leaders (Field Leaders.)
  • Ability to collaborate with other groups to mitigate and solve issues that may affect the work scope or the Fort McKay Strategic Services.
  • Ability to work independently and multitask, as well as work effectively in a team environment, adapting to changing client/work scope requirements.
  • Demonstrates continuous learning through cross-training, learning new skills, and refreshing prior skills.
  • Must have strong analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including personal safety, safety of co-workers, and the protection of Fort McKay Group of Companies and property in accordance and compliance with company practices, industry standards, and government regulations.
  • Excellent time management skills with an ability to manage conflicting priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight, collaboration and direction to Shift Supervisors and Team Leaders to ensure safe and efficient execution of mining and tailings activities.
  • Coordinate equipment allocation, production sequencing, and resource planning to meet shift targets.
  • Lead structured shift start ups, handovers, and end of shift reviews.
  • Ensure that all swipe division forms are completed daily to maintain accurate records.
  • Verify that all Statements of Work (SOWs) are being utilized correctly and that all limb (work or task) assessments are accurately recorded.
  • Monitor attendance and establish necessary documentation for personnel, ensuring compliance with company policies.
  • Communicate with HR regarding any labour or performance issues, facilitating resolutions as needed.
  • Ensure the Short Service Worker (SSW) program is completed within the six-month period, verifying that all training and assessments are signed off.
  • Ensure that all participants are competent in operating equipment and understand how to assess risks associated with their roles.
  • Develop and manage crew schedules, delegate responsibilities, and provide clear direction to meet operational goals.
  • Achieve or surpass daily production targets by executing operational plans and adjusting priorities as needed.
  • Collaborate with HSE on final investigation reports, including arranging review meetings for all injury‑related incidents prior to submission to senior management.
  • Share lessons learned with Shift Supervisors, Team Leaders, and operators to drive continuous improvement and prevent recurrence.
  • Responsible to report and support any workplace harassment or workplace violence issues in conjunction with applicable policies with HR and HSE.
  • Review and implement company policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with current occupational health and safety regulations and client expectations.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the field, conducting regular inspections, audits, and ride-along to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Work closely with HSE, Operations, and other leadership to uphold and reinforce safe work practices across all job sites.
  • Support and lead investigations into workplace incidents, near misses, and hazardous conditions. Conduct root cause analyses and follow through on corrective actions, while mentoring staff on lessons learned.
  • Support the HSE department with injury management and Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) when required.
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate records in a timely and organized manner.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, pre-job briefings, and monthly safety meetings.
  • Review FLRAs as part of daily responsibilities.
  • Contribute to the review process for JSAs, Hazard IDs, and similar documentation. This is a collaborative effort involving Team Leads, employees, HSE, and management, with final updates completed by the HSE Supervisor before approval.
  • Stay informed on relevant OH&S legislation, federal/provincial laws, and internal policies to ensure compliance.
  • Foster a proactive safety culture where all employees are encouraged to take ownership of health, safety, and environmental practices.
