Senior Scientist - Solid Mechanics Modeling

Corning•City of Corning, NY
•$83,220 - $114,428

About The Position

Corning is seeking a Senior Scientist, Solid Mechanics Modeling to support development of photonics connector technologies within Corning Research and Development. The role applies solid mechanics and thermal modeling to understand product reliability, adhesion and bonding between components, device deformation, and manufacturing yield in advanced photonics and packaged-optics applications. The scientist works with multidisciplinary teams to develop models, assess technical risks, interpret results, and inform product, process, and technology-development decisions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science, Physics, Applied Mechanics, or a related technical field, plus relevant experience; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong foundation in solid mechanics, structural analysis, finite element analysis, computational modeling, or related engineering methods.
  • Experience developing and applying models to understand product-, material-, process-, or reliability-related technical problems.
  • Ability to independently design analyses or experiments, interpret results, identify technical risks, and communicate recommendations.
  • Strong scientific problem-solving, written communication, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work in the United States and meet export-control eligibility requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science, Physics, Applied Mechanics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with thermal analysis, multiphysics modeling, reliability modeling, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, fatigue, constitutive modeling, or experimental mechanics.
  • Experience evaluating adhesion, bonding, stress, deformation, temperature effects, or reliability in small-scale components or devices.
  • Experience supporting photonics, optical components, connectors, advanced materials, glass, ceramics, polymers, composites, or similar technologies.
  • Experience connecting modeling results to product design, manufacturing processes, quality, yield, reliability, or technology-development decisions.
  • Industrial R&D, product-development, manufacturing, national laboratory, or postdoctoral research experience.
  • Record of technical publications, patents, invention disclosures, technical reports, or related intellectual-property contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply solid mechanics, structural, thermal, and multiphysics models to evaluate photonics connector, component, and process performance.
  • Assess reliability-related challenges involving adhesion, bonding, deformation, stress, temperature distribution, and product or process yield.
  • Design and conduct modeling, simulation, and experimental work; analyze results and provide data-driven technical recommendations.
  • Support technical problem solving, root-cause investigations, product concepts, prototypes, and process-development activities.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, manufacturing teams, and project stakeholders to translate technical questions into practical modeling approaches.
  • Document methods, findings, and recommendations in technical reports, presentations, and other knowledge-sharing materials.
  • Contribute technical leadership, mentoring, innovation, and intellectual-property development as appropriate.

Benefits

  • Company-wide bonuses and long-term incentives.
  • Company-paid pension benefit with fixed contributions.
  • Matching contributions to a 401(k) savings plan.
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Paid parental leave and family-building support.
  • Fitness benefits.
  • Company-paid life insurance and disability benefits.
  • Disease management programs.
  • Paid time off.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Recognition program to celebrate successes and reward exceptional contributions.
