Senior Scientist I - BDL Modeling

AbbVie•Worcester, MA
•$96,500 - $183,500

About The Position

The Senior Scientist I will be part of a centralized modeling team supporting the development and implementation of models across early- and late-stage bioprocess development for diverse biologic modalities, including monoclonal antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, bispecifics, and gene therapies. Working collaboratively across functions, the scientist will develop and apply modeling and experimental approaches to address scientific and process development challenges, including scale-up and technology transfer. The team aims to build next-generation modeling capabilities through integration with artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The role covers upstream cell culture and downstream purification processes. It involves translating scientific and business challenges into modeling strategies, integrating multidisciplinary data and scientific fundamentals, and communicating model results and recommendations to project teams and leadership. The scientist will also support model transfer and lifecycle management in accordance with applicable corporate, safety, and GxP standards, and contribute to technical and regulatory documents, publications, presentations, and patentable innovations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience; or Master’s degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience; or PhD degree or equivalent education and 0–2 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with AI tool development and experience integrating AI tools into the bioprocess development ecosystem.
  • Excellent oral and written technical communication skills, including presenting research outcomes to multifunctional teams.
  • Ability to collaborate in a cross-functional environment and maintain strong working relationships with internal, global, and external collaborators.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to overcome complex issues.
  • Demonstrated success coordinating and executing important projects to achieve business goals.
  • Results-oriented work ethic, positive can-do attitude, strong sense of urgency, and self-motivation.

Nice To Haves

  • Education in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, or biotechnology.
  • Experience in both upstream cell culture and downstream purification process development.
  • Expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, cell culture kinetics and metabolic flux balance modeling, chromatography modeling, and filtration theory and modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conceptualize, build, and apply fit-for-purpose models for upstream cell culture and downstream purification processes across early- and late-stage bioprocess development.
  • Translate scientific and business challenges into modeling strategies that deepen process understanding, guide process optimization, and support scale-up and technology transfer.
  • Advance modeling capabilities by integrating AI tools to accelerate model development and implementation.
  • Work with the Automation and Digitalization team to establish data workflows and integrated tools for efficient model building and implementation.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary data and scientific fundamentals to assess model performance, assumptions, and limitations; draw actionable conclusions and resolve project challenges.
  • Collaborate in a cross-functional team spanning IT, Data Science, CMC, and Development; align priorities, adapt to evolving needs, and provide scientific mentorship and technical guidance as appropriate.
  • Communicate modeling approaches, results, limitations, and recommendations to project teams and leadership.
  • Support model transfer and lifecycle management, including implementation, documentation, maintenance, updates, and assessment of continued fitness for purpose in accordance with applicable corporate, safety, and GxP standards.
  • Serve as a primary author of modeling-related technical and regulatory documents, peer-reviewed publications, and scientific presentations, and contribute to patentable innovations as appropriate.
  • Evaluate literature and emerging technologies, identify modeling opportunities aligned with the team’s strategy, and incorporate advances into projects and broader modeling capabilities.
