About The Position

As a Senior Scientist, Mass Spectrometry/Protein Characterization, you will serve as the LC/MS subject matter expert within Protein Sciences. This laboratory-based position requires a proven ability in the acquisition and interpretation of LC/MS data from both intact protein and peptide mapping workflows. Working in a multidisciplinary team you will apply your expertise to complement the biophysical and biochemical characterizations of recombinant proteins and communicate to stakeholders across the US research organization. You like to work in an environment where you can: Apply your advanced Mass Spectrometry expertise to drive the characterization of proteins across diverse protein classes (soluble and membrane). Use your strong communication skills to collaborate with scientific teams across the organization to advance drug targets. Provide support for complementary biophysical techniques, including analytical SEC, SEC-MALS, mass photometry, FidaNeo, NanoDSF, and additional methods as required. Experience in functional and biochemical assays is beneficial. Grow in your role to mentor direct reports, developing their expertise in experimental design and execution as well as guiding professional development.

Requirements

  • PhD in related field and/or several years of industrial laboratory-based LC/MS experience (biochemistry, chemistry, molecular & cellular biology, or biophysics) + 6-12 years’ experience, BS or MS + 12-18 years’ experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Waters Connect and Thermo Scientific Xcalibur software
  • Hands-on experience and responsibility for Thermo Orbitrap and Waters instrumentation coupled to UPLC systems
  • Peptide mapping expertise and knowledge of PTMs
  • Use of data analysis software packages for sequence mapping and intact mass deconvolution e.g. ProteinMetrics Byos, Biopharma Finder, Proteome Discoverer or similar
  • Knowledge of protein expression systems
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance of LC/MS systems
  • Excellent organisational, communication, record keeping, team-working abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with mass spectrometry data analysis of peptides and NCEs
  • Experience with biophysical techniques within a multidisciplinary environment e.g. analytical SEC, SEC-MALS, mass photometry, FidaNeo, NanoDSF
  • Knowledge of the drug discovery pipeline, including translational and clinical pharmacology as it relates to mass spectrometry analysis
  • Managing or mentoring junior scientists

Responsibilities

  • Characterizing recombinant proteins of different classes, including cytosolic, secreted, membrane and refolded proteins.
  • Working hands-on in the lab, maintaining and overseeing LC/MS equipment.
  • Apply your knowledge of current LC/MS technologies to innovate and drive proteomic and lipidomic workflows where applicable
  • Managing the workload and demands from multiple projects by communicating experimental results, advising on methods, troubleshooting and executing experiments.
  • Supporting protein sciences team by exploring new technologies, contributing to annual budgets and strategies, and maintaining modern instrumentation in the laboratory.

Benefits

  • We have a caring, supportive culture where everyone feels included, respected, and has equal opportunities to do their best work.
  • Working for us, you will discover a place where you can grow, and have the freedom to carve your own career path to achieve your full potential.
