Senior Scientist I, Experimental & Systems Immunology

AbbVie•Cambridge, MA
•$96,500 - $183,500•Onsite

About The Position

AbbVie’s Immunology Discovery organization is seeking a Senior Scientist I for its Immune Profiling Systems Immunology team within Discovery Immunology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The role contributes to identifying, validating, and prioritizing novel therapeutic targets for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases by integrating experimental immunology with quantitative data analysis. The scientist works at the interface of wet-laboratory experimentation and computational analysis, designing and executing human disease-relevant experiments. The work emphasizes complex in vitro models, including organoids and complex co-culture systems, characterized with high-throughput methodologies. The role generates high-dimensional datasets, analyzes and interprets results, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to advance discovery programs and portfolio decisions.

Requirements

  • BS/BA, MS, or PhD in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Typically 0–3+ years of relevant academic and/or industry experience for a PhD, 8–9+ years for an MS, or 10–11+ years for a BS.
  • Strong scientific background in immunology and immune-mediated diseases.
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental design, execution, and interpretation.
  • Hands-on experience working with primary human samples, including PBMCs, tissues, or disease-relevant cellular systems.
  • Hands-on experience working with complex in vitro models, such as organoids or complex co-culture systems, and applying high-throughput methodologies to characterize their cellular and functional properties.
  • Experience with immunological and molecular biology techniques such as flow cytometry, cell culture, ELISA/multiplex cytokine assays, gene expression analysis, and other functional assays.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate complex biological datasets.
  • Working knowledge of statistical methods and data analysis tools such as R, Python, GraphPad Prism, Spotfire, or equivalent platforms.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and contribute to project advancement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with single-cell genomics, spatial biology, multi-omics profiling, and next-generation sequencing technologies, such as 10x Genomics Chromium 3′/5′ gene expression or Flex.
  • Experience in target identification, target validation, reverse translation, or mechanism-of-action studies.
  • Familiarity with systems immunology and integration of experimental and computational datasets.
  • Experience applying data science approaches to biological questions.
  • Track record of scientific publications, patents, or presentations at major scientific meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and interpret immunology-focused experiments using primary human cells, PBMCs, tissues, and disease-relevant model systems.
  • Design and execute studies using complex in vitro models, including organoids or complex co-culture systems, and characterize them using high-throughput methodologies such as multiplexed assays and sequencing-based profiling.
  • Develop and implement assays to characterize immune cell function, signaling pathways, cellular phenotypes, and therapeutic mechanisms of action.
  • Generate and analyze data from flow cytometry, cytokine profiling, NGS-based approaches, single-cell and spatial profiling workflows, and other molecular profiling platforms.
  • Partner with computational biologists, bioinformaticians, translational scientists, and disease-area teams to develop mechanistic insights and prioritize therapeutic targets.
  • Apply statistical and computational approaches to analyze complex datasets and communicate findings to multidisciplinary audiences.
  • Maintain accurate experimental records and contribute to scientific reports, presentations, and project reviews.
  • Stay current with advances in immunology, translational research, systems biology, and emerging technologies, and incorporate new approaches into discovery programs.
  • Present findings to project teams, leadership, and external scientific forums as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the scientific culture through collaboration, mentorship of junior scientists, and sharing technical expertise.
