Senior Scala Software Engineer
About The Position
The Senior Software Engineer will develop and maintain platform notification services that alert customers to critical events involving client engines and machines. The role requires strong Java, Scala, and Akka experience and focuses on building scalable, highly available, and reliable software applications. The engineer will work independently on complex technical challenges, drive business-focused application development, mentor team members, and contribute to software architecture, integration, testing, and deployment. The position is based in Chicago, with onsite work on Mondays and Wednesdays for the hybrid arrangement. Chicago-based candidates are preferred, and local candidates must be available for in-person interviews when required. The assignment is listed as 12 months.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of software development experience using Java 8 or later.
- At least 3 years of Scala programming experience.
- At least 2 years of experience with Akka technologies, including Streams, Actors, HTTP, or Persistence.
- Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.
- Experience developing and maintaining complex software applications.
- Bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree with at least 8 years of relevant experience.
- Ability to work independently on complex technical assignments.
- Strong analytical, debugging, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Candidates considered for the hybrid arrangement must be available to work onsite Mondays and Wednesdays.
- Local candidates must be available for in-person interviews when required.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with AWS services such as API Gateway, ALB, NLB, Fargate, Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, IAM, and CloudFormation.
- Experience with high-availability systems, scalable applications, microservices, and event-driven architecture.
- Experience with Jenkins, Azure DevOps, and automated software deployment.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, AWS DynamoDB, or other relational or NoSQL databases.
- Experience with Spring Boot and RESTful API design.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java, Scala, and Akka.
- Build reliable, highly available, and scalable platform notification services.
- Develop and maintain complex application and infrastructure components.
- Identify and resolve complex application and technical issues.
- Drive application development and deliver business-value-driven features.
- Apply software architecture patterns, including microservices, event-driven architecture, and MVC.
- Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins and Azure DevOps.
- Deploy and support applications in AWS environments.

- Maintain high standards of software quality, documentation, and development practices.
- Mentor software engineers and provide technical guidance.
