About The Position

Providing in-depth technical and program support over a wide range of departmental Safety Officer functions with emphasis on site EH&S assurance of environmental regulations, hazardous materials, safety, interim life safety, wastewater, indoor environmental quality, asbestos compliance and fire/life safety and OSHA/EPA and other relevant regulatory programs. Interacts with and, at times, provides EH&S guidance with hospital management and supervisory staff to assist with unit-based safety program development and implementation. Develops, implements and assesses site compliance with internal, regulatory agencies and national guidelines and standards. Collaborates with the EH&S Director and other staff to implement portfolio specific programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 3-5 years related work experience required.
  • Requires strong knowledge of environmental health & safety regulations and requirements and the equipment, processes and services of the medical center that are governed by them.
  • Demonstrates relevant certifications in areas such as: OSHA Hazwoper, General Duty/Business, RCRA, DOT, IATA, Emergency Response, Asbestos Inspector, MWRA Operator License.
  • May be required to work off-hours, respond to urgent matters, and will participate in managing the EH&S On-Call pager.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications.
  • May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  • Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
  • Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas.
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s).
  • Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health and Safety Science, Environmental Sciences or related field preferred.
  • Preferred certifications in at least one of the following areas: CIH, CSP and HEM

Responsibilities

  • Provides and applies strategies for compliance with all environmental and safety regulations.
  • Interacts with regulatory agencies in routine communications, reporting, and special projects.
  • Reviews and interprets regulations and legislation, which may affect BIDMC operations.
  • Completes required regulatory compliance filings.
  • Provides for all commonly encountered industrial hygiene needs, including exposure monitoring to chemicals and other environmental concerns.
  • Implements job hazard analysis and other hazard control methods.
  • Develops and implements recommendations to ensure continued worker safety.
  • Maintains competence in using monitoring equipment.
  • Manages, monitors and evaluates medical center fire/life safety program by evaluating preparedness and response to fire emergencies and conducting fire drills.
  • Acts as an organizational-wide resource and expert in leading people, teams, and functions.
  • Provides guidance, as needed, to ensure appropriate regulatory registrations are completed and submitted to appropriate agencies.
  • Provides leadership and support to programs for managing hazardous chemicals and wastes.
  • Plans, develops and implements medical center chemical waste program to ensure appropriate identification, handling and disposal in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Maintains required documents.
  • Develops, implements and maintains hospital-wide hazard and safety surveillance program to review and ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts routine visits of all areas to ensure adherence to state and federal regulations.
  • Ensures the effective communication of audit results.
  • Leads team plans for correction as appropriate.
