About The Position

United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR) is a publicly-traded biotech/pharmaceutical company and a public benefit corporation focused on developing novel pharmaceutical therapies and technologies for rare, deadly diseases and to address the shortage of transplantable organs. The company has six FDA-approved therapies and is developing additional treatments for pulmonary fibrosis. They are also working on creating bio-artificial organs to eliminate transplant waiting lists. This role is an opportunity to lead the risk management function, with a clear career trajectory towards becoming the future head of risk management. The Senior Risk Management Director will oversee enterprise risk management, corporate insurance, and organizational resiliency, aiming to reduce exposure, strengthen preparedness, and enable proactive risk-informed planning and decision-making across all company endeavors, including tissue engineering, organ manufacturing, aviation, and organ transportation.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of risk management and/or commercial insurance experience with a Bachelor's Degree in business, finance, or risk management OR 13+ years of risk management and/or commercial insurance experience with a Master's Degree in business, finance, or risk management.
  • 5+ years of experience as a functional leader and/or people manager.
  • Ability to read, understand, explain, and negotiate insurance policy contract language.
  • Subject Matter Expert in commercial insurance coverages, enterprise risk management, and organizational resilience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills with team, peers, and business stakeholders.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to engage confidently across all levels of the organization, including executive leadership and the Board, delivering risk insights with clarity, credibility, and impact.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to execute effectively at both strategic and operational levels.
  • Proven ability to lead enterprise risk processes, manage complex insurance portfolios, and oversee cross-functional risk initiatives.
  • Skilled in managing a team; including developing others, giving feedback, managing conflict, and fostering collaboration across disciplines.

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years of experience in biotech or pharmaceutical industry, including global clinical trial risk strategy.
  • Deep understanding of contractual risk, and indemnification provisions within the life sciences space.
  • Master’s Degree MBA, JD, or equivalent.
  • Certified Risk Manager (CRM).
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
  • Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC).
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM).
  • Safety, loss prevention, and claims experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure successful execution of the Department's strategic goals and objectives for Enterprise Risk Management (ERM).
  • Administer all ERM Program activities.
  • Assist corporate and business unit leaders in identifying exposures to loss and implementing appropriate risk management strategies.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a Risk Management Program Manual.
  • Lead and oversee the Property, Casualty, and Management liability insurance programs.
  • Participate in negotiating insurance coverage, pricing, structure, and limits for all insurance policies and service agreements.
  • Conduct cost/benefit analysis of program alternatives.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of limits and appropriateness of retentions/deductibles.
  • Participate in managing broker and insurer relationships.
  • Responsible for risk management compliance with Clinical Trial Insurance SOP.
  • Review leases, business development opportunities, clinical trial agreements, contracts, and other legal documents to evaluate wording and ensure compliance with insurance and risk management policies.
  • Oversee business continuity management/planning across all business segments.
  • Lead the Corporate Resiliency Program to ensure critical business functions can resume normal operations within planned disruption specifications.
  • Ensure the management of the Organizational Resiliency Program includes regular testing of plans.
  • Assist business units with review and inspection of facilities with a focus on loss reduction.
  • Review and provide recommendations on insurer-issued loss prevention reports.
  • Provide ongoing risk management and insurance subject matter expertise, resources, guidance, and collaboration to all Unitherians.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.
