About The Position

Alarm.com is seeking a senior RF/EMC engineer to join its Device Engineering team and develop connected devices for residential and commercial properties, including security panels, networking gateways, video cameras, sensors, and life-safety devices. The engineer will own RF design and EMC compliance for compact, multi-radio products using cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LoRa, and sub-GHz radios. The work involves collaboration with hardware and mechanical teams, as well as other engineers across the company, in an agile environment. The position is based at Alarm.com's Tysons, Virginia headquarters and includes mentoring junior RF/EMC engineers. The role covers product development from requirements through certification and production, including antenna and RF front-end design, EMI-aware circuit and PCB design, coexistence and desense investigations, simulations, testing, troubleshooting, and regulatory and carrier certification. The engineer will prepare test plans, work with test laboratories, communicate design trade-offs across teams, and help improve team guidelines and methods. Alarm.com values in-person collaboration; employees work from the office four days a week. The base salary range is $145,000–$155,000 USD. Sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization and other immigration-related support is not available for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, focused on RF, microwave, or electromagnetics.
  • At least 5 years of RF and EMC design experience on wireless products, including owned designs that shipped and passed regulatory certification.
  • RF front-end and antenna design experience for compact products, including antenna selection or design, multiband impedance matching, placement, keepouts, and RF PCB layout.
  • Knowledge of low-EMI hardware design, including stackup, grounding, return paths, filtering, shielding, and high-speed and switching-supply layout practices.
  • Experience diagnosing and fixing receiver desense caused by platform noise or collocated radios, with sensitivity loss quantified before and after.
  • Experience root-causing and fixing radiated and conducted emissions and immunity failures using near-field probes, current probes, and spectrum analysis.
  • Electromagnetic simulation experience with Ansys HFSS, SIwave, or equivalent tools, applied to design decisions.
  • Working knowledge of FCC, ISED, and CE/RED requirements and experience writing RF and EMC test plans.
  • Understanding of cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and sub-GHz protocol stacks and their effects on RF testing and coexistence.
  • Expertise using VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, cellular and Wi-Fi communication testers, and anechoic chamber OTA systems.
  • Ability to explain trade-offs clearly to hardware, mechanical, firmware, and program teams; experience mentoring junior engineers or willingness to do so.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering focused on RF, microwave, or electromagnetics.
  • Carrier and industry certification experience, including PTCRB and operator OTA TRP/TIS requirements.
  • Experience with battery-powered or low-power wireless devices, cameras, or other products with high-speed digital interfaces next to radios.
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout experience in Altium.
  • Python automation of RF measurements and data analysis, including use of AI-assisted tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own RF design and performance for assigned products from requirements through certification and production.
  • Design, select, and place antennas; design matching networks; and define RF layout, keepouts, and front-end circuits with hardware and mechanical teams.
  • Apply low-EMI design practices and lead RF/EMC schematic and layout reviews to identify risks before layout release.
  • Evaluate and resolve receiver desense and coexistence issues between collocated radios and platform noise sources.
  • Troubleshoot EMI and EMC failures, identify root causes, and deliver fixes validated on hardware.
  • Run antenna and EMI simulations to prevent failures and aid debugging.
  • Write RF performance and EMC compliance test plans, drive products through regulatory and carrier certification, and work directly with test laboratories.
  • Mentor junior RF/EMC engineers, review their results, and improve team design guidelines and test methods.
  • Communicate and collaborate with others to support timely project delivery.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
