About The Position

The Center for Surgical and Transplant Applied Research (CSTAR) at NYU Langone Health is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to provide advanced scientific and methodological expertise. CSTAR is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to improving organ donation and transplantation through rigorous, data-driven research. The Senior Research Scientist leads the design and execution of complex quantitative studies using national transplant registries, electronic health records, administrative claims, surveys, and other large healthcare datasets. Working within the scientific framework established by CSTAR faculty and principal investigators, the role develops analytical strategies, addresses complex methodological challenges, and ensures the rigor, reproducibility, and timely completion of quantitative research projects. The position contributes substantially to grant applications, manuscripts, scientific presentations, and reports, and provides senior-level guidance and mentorship to analysts and other research staff.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and execution of complex statistical analyses under the direction of study principal investigators.
  • Develop research questions, study designs, analytical strategies, and statistical analysis plans for observational, clinical, health services, and outcomes research.
  • Apply advanced statistical methods to data from national transplant registries, electronic health records, administrative claims, community-based surveys, project-specific assessments, and other healthcare data sources.
  • Select and implement appropriate statistical methodologies, which may include survival analysis, longitudinal analysis, multilevel modeling, causal inference, missing-data methods, predictive modeling, and sensitivity analyses.
  • Independently evaluate methodological and data-related challenges and recommend scientifically rigorous and feasible solutions.
  • Provide senior-level scientific oversight for data management, variable development, cohort construction, statistical programming, model development, validation, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Establish and apply standards for data quality, statistical programming, documentation, reproducibility, and validation across projects.
  • Critically review analytical results to assess the validity of assumptions, identify potential sources of bias, and ensure findings are interpreted appropriately.
  • Translate clinical, scientific, and operational questions into well-defined quantitative research studies in collaboration with principal investigators, clinicians, analysts, research staff, and external partners.
  • Serve as a senior quantitative collaborator on multisite studies, national scientific committees, and projects involving external research institutions.
  • Coordinate analytical activities across investigators, analysts, data managers, research teams, and collaborating institutions.
  • Prepare interim and final analytical reports for principal investigators, study teams, sponsors, data and safety monitoring boards, and other oversight groups.
  • Lead and contribute to peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, technical reports, and other scholarly products.
  • Contribute to grant applications and funding proposals, including study designs, research strategies, power and sample-size calculations, analytical plans, and preliminary analyses.
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences, seminars, working groups, and internal research forums.
  • Provide technical and scientific guidance to data analysts, research staff, trainees, and other research team members.
  • Train and mentor junior analysts in statistical methods, reproducible research practices, and the appropriate use of national transplant and healthcare datasets.
  • Review analytical code, results, tables, figures, and written methods to ensure accuracy, consistency, and scientific rigor.
  • Monitor project progress, identify analytical or operational barriers, and ensure timely and accurate completion of assigned deliverables.
  • Maintain current knowledge of advances in biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, transplantation research, and healthcare data science.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements related to research conduct, data security, patient privacy, and sensitive healthcare data.
