The Senior Research and Development Engineer is a technical leader and/or developing subject matter expert who applies engineering principles to solve complex technical challenges and ensure products meet clinical needs, safety requirements, and quality standards. The role may lead small projects or programs, own portions of medium to large projects, support other teams, collaborate across functional departments, develop technical expertise, and provide technical guidance. It may also involve creating procedures or white-paper guidance for functional groups. The engineer leads technical development and key design decisions, contributes to strategic goals and retrospective project reviews, and develops subject matter expertise through research, best practices, training, and implementation of new concepts. The role works with subject matter experts, physicians, and product managers, as applicable, to develop medical devices and improve patient care. It leads project activities and milestones, design-history-file documentation, process development, and technical contributions to innovation and intellectual property. The engineer builds cross-functional relationships, applies company processes and quality and regulatory requirements, may represent Cook in industry working groups or conferences, and mentors other personnel. The role requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering and five years of relevant experience; relevant master’s or doctoral degrees may reduce the experience requirement by two to four years. Experience in medical devices, a regulated industry, or an adjacent area is required. The position also requires strong analytical, critical-thinking, technical-writing, cross-functional problem-solving, and product/process development abilities. Fluency in AI and data concepts is required, including evaluating AI outputs, improving workflows with approved tools, identifying and mitigating bias or inaccuracies, and communicating AI-driven insights responsibly. Written and spoken English fluency, and local-language fluency where applicable, are required. The work is performed under general office environmental conditions and may involve extended sitting and close visual work with computers. Personal protective equipment may be required in some areas, and occasional travel may be necessary.
