About The Position

Formlabs is hiring a Senior R&D Reliability/Test Engineer to join its small, agile R&D Reliability Engineering Team. The team serves as an independent voice on product robustness, helping ensure hardware products are reliable so customers can spend more time printing and less time troubleshooting. It develops testing strategies, engineers electromechanical test rigs, and turns test and field data into actionable insights. The role focuses on reliability testing and analysis across systems, subsystems, and components. The engineer will develop and execute validation plans, investigate electromechanical subsystem and field failures, build automated test equipment, and work with R&D design teams throughout product development to assess risk and influence designs for reliability. The position also includes analyzing field failure trends and developing corrective action plans. Formlabs’ reliability work has included testing printer systems such as the LCD and light engine, mixer scraper, Z-axis, tank film, and cartridge and dispense system.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience testing a wide range of sensors, actuators, and mechanical components.
  • Experience developing system test plans and executing them efficiently within fast-paced product development timelines.
  • Ability to prototype and run tests from experimental setup through hardware and software implementation in Python.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including the ability to distill complex test results and field data into clear, concise insights that drive action.
  • Familiarity with complex electromechanical systems and a strong interest in understanding how to make them reliable.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Linux systems and scripting in various languages.
  • Experience with SQL for data analysis.
  • Prior experience in field failure analysis or quality engineering roles.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and manage system-, subsystem-, and component-level validation test plans to verify products meet design and reliability requirements.
  • Perform hands-on and data-driven root cause analysis of electromechanical subsystems and field failures using common problem-solving methodologies and a physics-of-failure approach.
  • Design, build, and implement automated testing equipment for subsystem characterization and reliability and environmental testing.
  • Collaborate with R&D design teams during product development to perform risk assessments, manage continuous testing, and contribute to design reviews, influencing product design for reliability.
  • Analyze field failure data to identify trends, prioritize investigations based on business value, and develop clear, actionable corrective action plans (CAPAs).
  • Prototype and run tests, including experimental setup and hardware and software implementation in Python.

Benefits

  • Unlimited 3D printing with any Formlabs material on any Formlabs printer.
  • Equity program through RSUs.
  • Healthcare coverage, including medical, dental, and vision, with a free employee-only plan effective on the first day of employment.
  • 401(k) matching with no vesting or tenure requirement.
  • Generous parental leave, fully paid for up to 16 weeks.
  • Flexible time off.
  • Six-week fully paid sabbatical after tenure milestones, with the option to take an additional six weeks.
  • Free on-site parking and pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Free on-site lunch, snacks, beverages, treats, beer kegs, and local coffee and espresso.
  • Professional development opportunities such as conferences, trade shows, and hackathons.
