Senior R&D Reliability/Test Engineer

Formlabs•Boston, MA
•$130,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Formlabs is seeking a Senior R&D Reliability/Test Engineer to join its small, agile R&D Reliability Engineering Team. The team serves as an independent voice on product robustness, helping ensure hardware products are reliable so customers can spend more time printing and less time troubleshooting. It develops testing strategies, builds electromechanical test rigs, and turns test and field data into actionable insights. The engineer will develop and manage validation plans at system, subsystem, and component levels; investigate electromechanical subsystem and field failures; and design automated equipment for characterization and reliability or environmental testing. The role works closely with R&D design teams throughout product development, contributing to risk assessments and design reviews and helping build reliability into products from the outset. It also includes analyzing field-failure trends and developing corrective action plans. The team’s prior work includes reliability testing for the Form 4 printer, including custom rigs for LCD and light-engine testing, debris-detection testing for the mixer scraper, accelerated lifetime testing of the Z-axis, pneumatic fixtures for tank-film tension, and cartridge and dispensing-system optimization. The annual base pay range is $130,000–$250,000 USD. Compensation also includes equity; the base pay is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, location, and expected impact.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience testing a wide range of sensors, actuators, and mechanical components.
  • Experience developing system test plans and executing them efficiently within fast-paced product development timelines.
  • Ability to prototype and run tests, from experimental setup through hardware and software implementation in Python.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including the ability to distill complex test results and field data into clear, concise insights that drive action.
  • Familiarity with complex electromechanical systems and interest in understanding how to make them work reliably.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Linux systems and scripting in various languages.
  • Experience with SQL for data analysis.
  • Prior experience in field failure analysis or quality engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and manage system-, subsystem-, and component-level validation test plans to ensure products meet design and reliability requirements.
  • Perform hands-on and data-driven root cause analysis of electromechanical subsystems and field failures using common problem-solving methodologies and a physics-of-failure approach.
  • Design, build, and implement automated testing equipment for subsystem characterization and reliability and environmental testing.
  • Collaborate with R&D design teams throughout product development, performing risk assessments, managing continuous testing, and contributing to design reviews to influence product reliability.
  • Analyze field-failure data to identify trends, prioritize investigations based on business value, and develop actionable corrective action plans (CAPAs).

Benefits

  • Unlimited 3D printing with any Formlabs material on any Formlabs printer.
  • Equity program with RSUs.
  • Healthcare coverage, including medical, dental, and vision, with a free employee-only plan effective on the first day.
  • 401(k) matching with no vesting or tenure requirement.
  • Fully paid parental leave of up to 16 weeks.
  • Flexible time off.
  • Six-week fully paid sabbatical after tenure milestones, with the option to take an additional six weeks.
  • Free on-site parking and pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Free on-site lunch, snacks, beverages, treats, beer kegs, and local coffee and espresso.
  • Professional development opportunities, including conferences, trade shows, and hackathons.
  • Company activities and events, including monthly socials, an annual weekend summer camp, and a company hackathon.
