Senior Quantum Measurement Engineer

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $261,000

About The Position

Microsoft Quantum is building a scalable quantum computing system using a full-stack approach across materials, devices, systems, and cloud services. Its hardware strategy centers on topological qubits and hybrid semiconductor–superconductor devices that require sophisticated nanofabrication and stringent control of interfaces, materials quality, and process integration. The Senior Quantum Measurement Engineer will measure and operate integrated quantum systems combining topological qubits with other advanced components. The engineer will help demonstrate system capabilities and understand performance and limitations, working closely with experts in materials science, nanofabrication, microwave engineering, and system engineering in an interdisciplinary environment spanning research, development, and production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field and 6+ years of experience in industry or a research and development environment; or a master’s degree in one of these fields and 4+ years of experience; or a doctorate in one of these fields and 1+ years of experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status as required to assess eligibility for access to export-controlled information; citizenship will be verified with a valid passport, with other applicable documents accepted for lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.
  • Ability to apply AI to accelerate engineering while developing shipping and prototype code.
  • Ability to leverage AI tools to drive innovation and efficiency, including performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, and day-to-day task automation.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field and 8+ years of experience in industry or a research and development environment; or a master’s degree in one of these fields and 6+ years of experience; or a doctorate in one of these fields and 3+ years of experience; or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years’ experience, including PhD experience, conducting experiments and related work on solid-state quantum devices and associated control systems.
  • 8+ years’ hands-on experience, including PhD experience, operating, debugging, and improving complex experimental systems, including cryogenic measurement systems at 4K and colder.
  • 8+ years’ experience, including PhD experience, with data acquisition, programming in a high-level language such as Python or MATLAB, and version control such as Git.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments to characterize integrated quantum systems, including hybrid semiconductor-superconductor devices.
  • Extract actionable information from complex, partial, and noisy results, and communicate proposed actions to team members and stakeholders.
  • Use technical input across materials science, microwave engineering, and quantum device physics to improve overall system performance.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline and automate quantum measurements, including applying AI methods where appropriate.
  • Embody Microsoft’s culture and values.
