Senior Quantum Research Engineer

National Institute of Standards and Technology•Boulder, CO

About The Position

NIST is seeking a Senior Quantum Research Physicist for the Advanced Microwave Photonics Group within the Applied Physics Division. The role focuses on experimental research in quantum information science and quantum computing using superconducting circuits and related devices. The position is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit for an occupation with a severe shortage of candidates. The successful candidate will lead complex experimental research, oversee the design, fabrication, characterization, and measurement of superconducting quantum devices and materials, and conduct basic and applied research in support of project objectives. The work also includes developing and evaluating techniques for novel quantum-circuit fabrication, contributing to laboratory and cleanroom operations, and communicating findings through scientific publications and conference presentations. This position is covered by NIST’s Alternative Personnel Management System (APMS), a pay-for-performance system. A probationary period may be required. The position has an education requirement, and transcripts must be submitted to validate it.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must be suitable for Federal employment.
  • Meet the engineering basic education requirements through an ABET-accredited engineering bachelor's program; qualifying coursework in engineering science or physics; or one of the specified combinations of education, training, experience, registration/licensure, examination, academic coursework, or related curriculum and experience.
  • Possess at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level (ZP-III at NIST).
  • Specialized experience must include designing, producing, or measuring superconducting quantum devices; leading high-impact research in quantum information science; and experience working with sub-kelvin cryogenic apparatus, microwave hardware, or cleanroom instruments.
  • Submit transcripts to validate the education requirement. Unofficial transcripts may be submitted with the application; an official copy is required before a final offer.
  • Foreign education must be evaluated by an accredited organization for comparability to U.S. accredited institutions; submit the evaluation with a course-by-course listing.
  • Select at least one eligibility to be considered for the position.
  • All documents submitted must be legible for qualification and eligibility determinations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex experimental research in quantum information science.
  • Oversee the design, fabrication, characterization, and measurement of superconducting quantum devices and materials.
  • Conduct basic and applied research to support project objectives.
  • Develop techniques to test, verify, and implement novel fabrication methods for quantum circuits.
  • Contribute to experimental operations in the laboratory and cleanroom, including work involving cryogenics, microwave and transport measurements, material characterization, and cleanroom tool operation.
  • Communicate scientific findings through publications and conference presentations.

Benefits

  • Federal employees and their families have access to a comprehensive benefits package.
  • NIST offers work-life flexibilities to help employees balance responsibilities at home and at work.
