About The Position

Shermco Industries is a leader in electrical testing, commissioning, maintenance, and protection & controls services. As we continue to grow across Western Canada, we are seeking an experienced Senior Field Protection & Controls professional; Technologist or Engineer to join our British Columbia team. This role is well suited for a seasoned Protection & Controls specialist who enjoys hands-on, field-based work and takes pride in supporting the safety, reliability, and performance of critical power systems. In this senior field position, you will support utility, transmission, distribution, generation, and industrial clients through the commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and modernization of protection, control, and communication systems. This is a technical execution role focused on field leadership, commissioning, and high-quality client service rather than office-based design work.

Requirements

  • 7–15 years of progressive experience in field-based protection & controls work on large or complex substation, generation, transmission, distribution, or industrial power system projects
  • Diploma or Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems, Protection & Controls, or a related discipline OR Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Completion of recognized industry training in protection & controls, relay testing, or substation commissioning
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with: SEL relay families (311, 387, 411, 421, 487, 587, 787 series)
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with: GE relays (C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, T60 – preferred)
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with: RTU and communication systems (GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, Novatech)
  • Strong technical reporting, documentation, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a field-based environment
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to client sites within British Columbia
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

Nice To Haves

  • Registration or eligibility for registration with a recognized Canadian professional body is an asset: ASTTBC (or equivalent) for Technologists OR Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) for Engineers
  • NETA Certification (Level I–IV) or equivalent testing certification is preferred
  • Manufacturer or utility relay training (e.g., SEL, GE) is a strong asset

Responsibilities

  • Perform installation, commissioning, functional testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protection and control systems, including: Protective relays, Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Communication processors and power line carrier (PLC) equipment
  • Conduct protection and control testing for: Transmission lines and high‑voltage buses, Transformers and circuit breakers, Feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks
  • Execute RTU, SCADA, and telecommunications upgrades for utility and industrial facilities
  • Configure, test, and commission SEL microprocessor relays, including: 311C, 311L, 387, 411L, 421, 487B/E/V, 587, 587Z, and 787
  • Work with GE protection relays (experience with C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, T60 considered an asset)
  • Work with RTU and communication platforms, including GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, and Novatech
  • Interpret and verify: One-line and three-line diagrams, Schematics and wiring diagrams, Protection settings and communication configurations
  • Identify discrepancies, recommend corrective actions, and support issue resolution
  • Complete accurate test reports, commissioning documentation, time, and expense reporting
  • Operate and maintain assigned company vehicles, tools, and test equipment
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental requirements, and actively promote a strong safety culture
