About The Position

The NSLS-II Data Science and System Integration Engineering and Equipment Group is seeking a Senior Controls & Equipment Protection Engineer. This role involves reporting to the Engineering and Equipment group leader and being responsible for overseeing the development and operational support of PLC-based and other equipment protection controls. The position requires close interaction with technicians, engineers, and scientific staff, focusing on gathering and delivering functional and technical requirements, developing standards, and communicating work status. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Minimum 10 years engineering experience in an automation and controls environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of equipment interlock logic, programming, wiring, sensors, and actuators.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting skills and analytical problem-solving abilities with both software and hardware.
  • Ability to develop and employ documented standards and processes in the service of production of design, test procedures, training, and technical documentation such as schematics.
  • Fluency with defining and executing technically complex projects of various size, including establishing scope and exit criteria, gathering requirements, providing effort estimates, maintaining work schedules, and managing materials inventory.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, with people who have a range of interests and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • 15 or more years engineering and/or leadership experience in an automation and controls environment.
  • Experience with PLC programming methods (e.g. Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block), particularly as implemented on Allen Bradley or similar commercial automation platforms.
  • Experience with software integration of PLCs, particularly using EPICS, Control System Studio, or github.
  • Creativity and knowledge sufficient to deliver robust and state-of-the-art equipment protection solutions which can meet rapidly changing requirements.
  • Ability to lead small teams, build consensus, and provide leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Keep knowledge and materials on hand to address equipment protection development and support needs for 30-plus beamline instruments.
  • Gather and document comprehensive requirements and version-controlled designs for equipment protection implementations and updates.
  • Develop and work to schedules and estimates of effort and materials costs for equipment protection development, installation, and testing.
  • Communicate regularly to stakeholders and management regarding all beamline equipment protection efforts including development and support.
  • Maintain documentation and training for troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment protection components by a range of technical staff.
  • Deliver reliable operations of experimental systems by collaborating with scientists and technical staff from across the facility.
  • Employ best safety practices and procedures throughout all daily activities.
