About The Position

Intramotev is seeking a Senior Project Engineer, Rail to lead a multi-year deployment of self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles on an FRA-regulated short-line railroad. The program spans regulatory approval, factory and site acceptance, commissioning, and staged on-track testing, progressing from remote line-of-sight switching to remote teleoperation and autonomous freight movements in a revenue-service demonstration. This senior individual-contributor position owns the integrated program schedule, phase gates, and safety documentation and serves as the day-to-day technical point of contact for the customer railroad and suppliers. The role has no direct reports but directs field engineers and technicians on deployment work. Candidates are leveled by experience, and the role may be shaped for a stronger candidate. This is a full-time, in-office position based in St. Louis, Missouri, within a team of 3–10 engineers. Frequent travel within Missouri, up to 50%, is expected for work at the customer railroad site, including commissioning, testing, operator training, and operations.

  • Hands-on rail industry experience at a railroad (Class I, regional, or short line), a rail OEM, or a rail supplier.
  • Experience running an engineering project with external stakeholders through schedule, milestones, and risk management, including serving as the primary technical point of contact for an external customer.
  • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond one's area of expertise and ability to develop innovative approaches to underspecified problems.
  • Open-mindedness and comfort working in a team as an individual contributor and as technical lead for field deployment work.

  • Field test programs, commissioning, or acceptance testing on rail vehicles or equipment.
  • Short-line or terminal-switching operations, maintenance-of-way, or highway-rail grade crossing safety and engineering.
  • Locomotive or railcar mechanical systems, including MU and air-brake systems.
  • Experience with programs funded by federal grants (FRA or U.S. Department of Transportation), including progress reporting, cost share, and compliance.
  • Experience with autonomous, remote-control, or electric rail vehicles.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent project-management credential.
  • Advanced technical education, such as a bachelor's or master's degree, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
  • At least 5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination such as a master's degree plus 3 years of related work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain FRA test-program documentation, including the special-approval petition under 49 CFR Part 211, agreed test conditions, safety performance thresholds, and data-reporting requirements; coordinate FRA information requests with regulatory and systems-safety engineers.
  • Maintain operating protocols, standard operating procedures, stage-advancement criteria, and the monthly safety performance record contributing to the final Safety Case submitted to FRA.
  • Plan and lead factory and site acceptance testing for each railcar, plan staged on-track testing, own movement logs and operational data packages, and support integration with a legacy locomotive upfitted for multiple-unit (MU) operation.
