About The Position

Intramotev is seeking a Senior Project Engineer, Rail to lead a multi-year deployment of self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles on an FRA-regulated short-line railroad. The program spans regulatory approval, factory and site acceptance, commissioning, and staged on-track testing—from remote line-of-sight switching moves to remote teleoperation and autonomous freight movements in a revenue-service demonstration. The position owns the integrated program schedule, phase gates, and safety documentation, and serves as the day-to-day technical point of contact for the customer railroad and suppliers. This is a senior individual-contributor role with no direct reports; the engineer will direct field engineers and technicians on deployment work. This is a full-time, in-office position based in St. Louis, Missouri. The role works within a team of 3–10 engineers and involves frequent travel within Missouri, up to 50%, to the customer railroad site for commissioning, testing, operator training, and operations. Intramotev levels candidates by experience and may shape the role around a stronger candidate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Science.
  • At least 5 years of engineering or project-engineering experience.
  • Hands-on rail industry experience at a railroad (Class I, regional, or short line), rail OEM, or rail supplier.
  • Experience running an engineering project with external stakeholders through schedule, milestones, and risk management, including serving as the primary technical point of contact for an external customer.
  • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond one's area of expertise and ability to develop innovative approaches to underspecified problems.
  • Ability to work in a teaming environment as an individual contributor and as the technical lead for field deployment work.
  • Fluent written and verbal English.
  • Must be a U.S. Person; immigration or work-visa sponsorship will not be provided.
  • Education and experience may be met through advanced technical education and typically 5 or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination, such as a master's degree plus 3 years of related experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of FRA regulations (49 CFR Parts 200–299), including waivers, special approvals, or test programs.
  • Experience with system safety practices such as hazard analysis, safety cases, or reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) engineering.
  • Experience with field test programs, commissioning, or acceptance testing on rail vehicles or equipment.
  • Experience with short-line or terminal-switching operations, maintenance-of-way, or highway-rail grade crossing safety and engineering.
  • Knowledge of locomotive or railcar mechanical systems, including multiple-unit and air-brake systems.
  • Experience with federally funded programs (FRA or U.S. Department of Transportation), including progress reporting, cost share, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of autonomous, remote-control, or electric rail vehicles.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) credential or equivalent project-management credential.
  • Master's degree or advanced technical education.

Responsibilities

  • Own the integrated program schedule, milestones, and phase-gate reviews from regulatory approval through revenue service; run status meetings and report progress to internal leadership and the customer railroad.
  • Prepare and maintain FRA test-program documentation, including the special-approval petition under 49 CFR Part 211, agreed test conditions, safety performance thresholds, and data-reporting requirements; coordinate FRA information requests with regulatory and systems-safety engineers.
  • Maintain operating protocols, standard operating procedures, stage-advancement criteria, and monthly safety performance records that contribute to the final Safety Case submitted to FRA.
  • Plan and lead factory and site acceptance testing for each railcar and plan staged on-track testing; own movement logs and operational data packages; support integration with a legacy locomotive upfitted for multiple-unit operation.
  • Lead corridor and site surveys, site integration, and field mobilization at the customer railroad.
  • Build the operator training and certification program and workforce training curriculum.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the customer railroad and suppliers.
  • Direct field engineers and technicians on deployment tasks; coordinate with autonomy, software, electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams as needed; relay railroad feedback to product design.
  • Produce quarterly program reports, FRA coordination records, and documented time records required for a federally funded program.
