About The Position

The Senior Project Engineer, Special Projects Group, is responsible for overseeing all project tasks from proposal to final invoice payment, either personally or through subordinates. This role involves consultation, client meetings, and mentoring junior staff, all while embodying ECS Core Values and providing excellent customer service. The position requires a strong commitment to meeting project deadlines and managing geotechnical and geostructural design projects, including various earth retention systems, deep foundations, ground improvement, and dewatering. The Senior Project Engineer will also prepare and review proposals, periodically oversee construction materials testing (CMT) projects, and host or attend project meetings with clients to provide technical solutions. Collaboration with other managers on staffing decisions is also a key aspect of this role.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Bachelor and/or Master of Science in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or similar is required.
  • A Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required in each of the state(s) in which you work, or you must have the ability to obtain a local license through reciprocity within three months of hire date.
  • If driving for, or on behalf of, any ECS subsidiary, a valid driver's license is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong project management, consulting, and business development skills
  • Extensive knowledge of geotechnical and construction materials principles and applications
  • Ability to build a team and foster mentorship, development, and training
  • Strong knowledge of geotechnical-focused software
  • Experience with geostructural design projects.
  • Experience with projects in the power and energy sector including generation, transmission, substations, and/or battery storage.
  • Experience with projects in the transportation sector including highway and/or rail.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills
  • High-level understanding of prioritizing and urgency of work in the consulting industry
  • Review and provide feedback of work performed by junior staff

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the preparation and review of geotechnical reports and geostructural designs from junior staff.
  • Management of geotechnical engineering projects, including boring layouts, utility clearances, supervising drill rigs, in-situ testing, soil classification, laboratory test selection, and report preparation.
  • Management of geostructural design projects such as MSE walls, soil nail walls, pile and lagging walls, temporary support of excavation, deep foundation elements, ground improvement, and/or dewatering.
  • Preparation and oversight of preparation and review of geotechnical and CMT proposals.
  • Periodically overseeing CMT projects, reviewing daily reports, and assisting junior staff with issue resolution and field staff training.
  • Hosting or attending project meetings with clients to follow up on delivered reports and provide technical solutions.
  • Mentoring, training, and developing junior-level staff.
  • Collaborating with other managers on staffing decisions.
  • Interfacing with clients weekly, marketing services, and developing the client database.
  • Using geotechnical software and/or performing calculations to verify work and support recommendations.
  • Providing training for all subordinates to ensure technical qualifications.
  • Maintaining an acceptable level of billability.
  • Senior review of field reports twice daily.
  • Responsibility for all invoicing and collections on projects, ensuring contracts are in place, pay applications are sent, and invoices are correct.
  • Addressing issues of profitability and billability.
  • Ensuring timely delivery of projects and proposals for self and subordinates.
  • Hosting weekly meetings with Staff PMs and Project Managers to address workload balance and distribute information.
  • Meeting weekly with the Principal to discuss operations and goals/performance.
  • Coordinating project-specific meetings as needed and acting as the main client contact.
  • Participating in, practicing, and promoting ECS safety policies and culture.
  • Providing feedback on site safety planning and complying with safety policies.
  • Participating in field audits and safety investigations.
  • Attending required safety meetings and completing assigned safety training.
  • Promptly reporting safety incidents and near misses.
  • Stopping work and notifying supervisors of any safety hazards and violations.
  • Performing preliminary review of proposals and contracts for training and developmental purposes.
  • Sitting with junior staff to review project tasks and assignments and set goals.
  • Checking in daily with staff to ensure progress and reviewing work frequently.
  • Providing constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Reviewing and approving timecards for direct reports weekly.
