Senior Project Engineer - Mechanical Systems

Ambi Robotics•Berkeley, CA

About The Position

Ambi Robotics is a well-funded Series A startup developing AI-powered robotics to make e-commerce logistics more human-friendly and efficient. The Senior Project Engineer - Mechanical Systems will design, build, and support scalable robotic systems, owning customer-specific deployments from initial requirements and concept through shipment and installation support. The role works closely with the VP of Hardware and coordinates with Engineering, Product, Sales, Operations, vendors, and customers. The engineer will convert incomplete customer requirements into actionable plans, develop installation-ready system layouts and detailed designs in Onshape, and maintain assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing and installation documentation. The role also drives procurement, vendor coordination, kitting, and production to keep projects complete and on schedule. It emphasizes practical engineering judgment, clear communication, detail-oriented project execution, and making recurring customer engineering needs more scalable through reusable components, templates, standards, and processes.

Requirements

  • Mechanical engineering background or equivalent experience, with strong mechanical intuition and a solid understanding of physical equipment and interfaces.
  • Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design and system layout, including creating assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing or installation documentation; Onshape is preferred.
  • Experience managing technical projects with multiple dependencies and deadlines.
  • Organization and extreme attention to detail to keep procurement, open items, and schedules on track across several projects at once.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to make technical information clear to engineers and non-engineers.
  • Comfort working directly with vendors and supporting procurement.
  • Strong spreadsheet and data-organization skills.
  • A pragmatic, process-driven approach to following and improving repeatable engineering processes.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work well under pressure while maintaining high standards.
  • Eagerness to learn, solve challenging problems, and lead with curiosity.
  • Desire for career growth and ownership, with a track record of driving projects through physical completion rather than stopping at design release.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Project, Applications, Systems, or Integration Engineer, or in a similar role.
  • Experience with industrial automation, robotics, material handling, conveyor systems, packaging equipment, or other engineered-to-order machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Own customer-specific robotic system deployments from initial requirements and concept through shipment and installation support.
  • Translate loose or incomplete customer requirements into a concrete engineering plan, identifying missing information, interface risks, and blockers early.
  • Develop complete, accurate, installation-ready system layouts and detailed designs in Onshape.
  • Create and maintain assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing and installation documentation.
  • Drive procurement, vendor coordination, kitting, and production to ensure projects are complete and ready to ship on schedule.
  • Coordinate mechanical, electrical, controls, facility, and deployment interfaces with Engineering, Product, Sales, Operations, and customers.
  • Choose simple, proven solutions over unnecessary custom engineering and involve additional engineering expertise when appropriate.
  • Improve the scalability of customer engineering by turning recurring project needs into reusable components, templates, standards, and processes.

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with 5% matching.
  • Equity ownership.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Partial work-from-home option.
  • Free parking on site at headquarters.
  • Access to a full gym at headquarters.
  • Free lunches twice per week.
