Senior Project Engineer - Mechanical Systems

Ambi Robotics•Berkeley, CA
•$125,000 - $150,000

About The Position

Ambi Robotics is a well-funded Series A startup developing AI-powered robotics to make e-commerce logistics more human-friendly and efficient. The company is seeking a Senior Project Engineer - Mechanical Systems to design, build, and support scalable robotic systems. The role works closely with the VP of Hardware and owns customer-specific robotic system deployments from initial requirements and concepts through shipment and installation support. The engineer turns incomplete customer requirements into practical engineering plans; creates installation-ready system layouts and detailed designs in Onshape; and maintains assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing and installation documentation. The position also drives procurement, vendor coordination, kitting, and production, while coordinating mechanical, electrical, controls, facility, and deployment interfaces with internal teams and customers. The engineer is expected to favor simple, proven solutions where appropriate and make recurring customer-engineering needs more scalable through reusable components, templates, standards, and processes.

Requirements

  • Eagerness to learn, solve challenging problems, and lead with curiosity.
  • Desire for career growth and ownership of work, with a track record of driving projects through physical completion rather than stopping at design release.
  • Mechanical engineering background or equivalent experience, with strong mechanical intuition and a solid understanding of physical equipment and interfaces.
  • Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design and system layout, including creating assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing or installation documentation; Onshape is preferred.
  • Experience managing technical projects with multiple dependencies and deadlines, and strong organization and attention to detail to track procurement, open items, and schedules across several projects.
  • Strong communication skills to explain technical information to engineers and non-engineers, and comfort working directly with vendors and supporting procurement.
  • Strong spreadsheet and data-organization skills, with a pragmatic, process-driven approach to following and improving repeatable engineering processes.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work well under pressure while maintaining high standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Project, Applications, Systems, or Integration Engineer, or in a similar role.
  • Experience with industrial automation, robotics, material handling, conveyor systems, packaging equipment, or other engineered-to-order machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Own customer-specific robotic system deployments end to end, from initial requirements and concept through shipment and installation support.
  • Translate incomplete customer requirements into a concrete engineering plan and identify missing information, interface risks, and blockers early.
  • Develop accurate, installation-ready system layouts and detailed designs in Onshape.
  • Create and maintain assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing and installation documentation.
  • Drive procurement, vendor coordination, kitting, and production to ensure projects are complete and ready to ship on schedule.
  • Coordinate mechanical, electrical, controls, facility, and deployment interfaces with Engineering, Product, Sales, Operations, and customers.
  • Choose simple, proven solutions over unnecessary custom engineering and involve additional engineering expertise when needed.
  • Improve customer-engineering scalability by creating reusable components, templates, standards, and processes.
